Lake Tahoe skiing is divided by the north and south shores of, you guessed it, Lake Tahoe. The California side certainly weighs heavier for resorts, Nevada’s ski and snowboard areas still offer a challenge and we don’t mean at the craps table.
Sure, you’ve got the parties, the casinos, and the nightlife both in Reno and Las Vegas, but with Reno-Tahoe International Airport literally minutes away from either the north or south shores of Lake Tahoe, you can’t complain about vacationing in Nevada.
You’ve got one heck of little neighborhood mountain about 30 minutes from the airport. Mt. Rose opened in 2004, but when boundaries were dropped to include the 200-plus acres of world-class chutes, the area’s popularity took off. The 1,500 feet of vertical drop is the longest in the Sierra.
It’s a no-brainer to stay at Incline Village and ski or ride at both Mt. Rose and Diamond Peak if you want more of a ski resort vacation than a day jaunt.
North Lake Tahoe area is home to Sierra Nevada College and offers everything from quaint lodges to exclusive mountain retreats. Diamond Peak has everything for families. There are miles of freshly groomed downhill terrain with spectacular views of the lake and the surrounding Sierra range.
You already know that "what you say in Vegas stays in Vegas. But despite the dry desert environment of Glitter Gulch, you may leave talking about little known Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort.
The ski area is about an hour away from Vegas, up Lee Canyon. It may go unnoticed, but not for long. The Powdr Corp.-owned resort has a multi-year, multi-phase Master Development Plan on the table that includes upgraded lifts, new lifts, new base lodges, and a tube park.
Snowmaking keeps the area’s 800 vertical from melting away in the 300-plus days of sunshine, so you can ski or board carefree in the sun, then wind the night away with a fancy dinner or show back on the strip.
You can’t go wrong with Nevada when you want your vacation to be about more than skiing.
