Snowshoe Resort in West Virginia is off to one of its best season starts ever with all lifts and slopes operating in grand style. The resort is gearing up for the Martin Luther King weekend, Jan. 15-18. A three-night minimum package starts at $177 per person, per night for overnight lodging and two adult lift tickets. Lift tickets are free the day of arrival beginning Friday, Jan. 15.
One unusual way to take advantage of the long weekend is to book dinner at the Sunrise Backcountry Hut located about two miles from the Snowshoe Village. The Hut overlooks the Cheat Mountain Ridge in the Monongahela National Forest. The rustic cabin can accommodate 18 people for dinner. Entree choices are New York strip steak, duck, salmon, trout and Italian portobello mushrooms. Cost is $75 for a full course meal. A Hutmaster takes care of everyone's needs.
Starting a MLK mini-vacation a day early makes the Sunrise Hut an interesting additional overnight option especially for groups. The hut sleeps eight people overnight for $999 total. The price includes lodging, dinner, breakfast, and transportation from Snowshoe Resort.
If the Martin Luther King holiday seems too busy, then the Subaru Master the Mountain weekend, Jan. 23 -24, might be an alternative. The event offers a tour of the mountain with the resort's ski patrol, mini lessons from the resort's ski and snowboard school team, and an opportunity to test Nordica equipment.
