Visitors to OnTheSnow.com have singled out the downhill terrain at Utah's Snowbird Resort as their favorite in North America. The data period for voting was January 2010 when a Nielsen audit showed 2.3 million unique browsers logged in to the world's most visited Web portal. OnTheSnow.com is published by Mountain News Corp.
Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia, host of the 2010 Winter Olympics, received the top award as North America's Favorite Overall Resort.
Visitors also honored Park City Mountain Resort, also in Utah, as their "Favorite Family-Friendly Resort;" Keystone, Colo., as having their "Favorite Terrain Park;" and Telluride, also in Colorado, as having their "Favorite Nightlife."
The ski resort with the top average score (on a scale of 1 to 5) in each category, and a minimum number of entries, receives the award. Visitors then ranked them in five categories: Overall Favorite, Best Nightlife, Most Family-Friendly, Best Downhill Terrain and Best Terrain Park.
"User-generated content is a very powerful and effective way Web visitors have to communicate with each other," said Mountain News Corp. President and Publisher Rob Brown. "Skiers and snowboarders are relying on the word of their peers when they make resort choices."
Brown points out these rankings should not be used as comparisons of one resort to another, since all visitors to OnTheSnow.com have not visited every resort, and expectations of the ski experience vary greatly in regions throughout North America. "But, they do provide an accurate reflection of our visitors' experiences and their passion for particular resorts."
OnTheSnow visitors were enthusiastic about the resort in the Wasatch Mountain's Little Cottonwood Canyon. "Those who experienced Snowbird for themselves can attest to the many Utah license plates boasting the Greatest Snow on Earth," wrote one reviewer. "The terrain is expansive and the mountain is well laid out. There are four rather large bowls that help spread the place out on powder days," wrote another.
Snowbird's expansive terrain covers 2,500 acres. There are 85 runs serviced by 10 chairlifts and a tram. The resort averages 500 inches of snow each year and is a scenic 45-minute drive from Salt Lake City International Airport.
- Favorite Overall Resort: Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia
- Favorite Downhill Terrain: Snowbird, Utah
- Favorite Family Friendly: Park City, Utah
