Gotta try Loveland, Colo., for its name alone, especially on Valentine's Day. The community has turned marriage into a cottage industry, with wedding planners, Web sites listing venues, and the perfect name.
Visit Bretton Woods, N.H., for the elegance of the fine, old grand resort Mount Washington Hotel, and nearby Jackson village nestled in the White Mountains, with a world-class cross-country ski center and myriad cozy bed and breakfasts, and fine inns.
More traditional tastes might prefer Woodstock, Vermont, a quintessential, picturesque New England town with the nation's longest tradition of lift-served skiing, and an array of inns and bed and breakfasts. Ski or ride nearby at Suicide Six.
The Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vt., "Ski Capital of the East," is the nation's first cross-country ski center, and caters to couples and families. Stowe itself is worth a look, offering many other romantic nooks and corners.
For an international flavor, visit Quebec City, with the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac dominating the old city and dozens of cozy restaurants to explore, arm in arm, under the moonlight through streets oozing romance. Visit the ice hotel, and try the toboggan run. Practice your French.
Another trip north of the border: Stay at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, another old Canadian Pacific Railway enterprise, overlooks Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies. It began its life in 1890 as a rustic log cabin, and has grown into one of Canada's most elegant resort hotels. Ski or ride The Big Three mountains.
More athletic couples might like a visit to Skoki Lodge at nearby Lake Louise Ski Area and Mountain Resort. Skoki is billed as the "Canadian Rockies Premiere Backcountry Lodge," and could well be. The log cabin was built in 1931, sits 11 kilometers into the wilderness of Banff National Park, and offers meals and lodging for people willing to make the trek.
Fancy a taste of the Old West? Have a drink at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar in Jackson, Wyo., where visitors sit on saddles for barstools and drink at a bar inlaid with silver dollars, and a town square with arches of elk antlers at each corner. You ski or ride at Jackson Hole, nestled against the Tetons, using the area's new tram, or at Snow King in the town.
Ulley's Cabin at Crested Butte Mountain Resort in Colorado offers high-end dining in the form of gourmet lunches and Sleigh Ride Dinners in a nifty on-mountain log cabin. Diners can ride the chairlift up, snowshoe, or ride a snowcat-pulled sleigh.
Bend, Ore., describes itself as a mountain town that has it all. It certainly has great vistas from the mountains that surround it, and great skiing and riding at Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort . The town knocks itself out to make visitors welcome. Bend Cottages offer a romance getaway in tiny cabins in the heart of downtown.
Big Sky, Montana, is a great resort with Shoshone being one of nicest ski-in, ski-out hotels, with well-appointed rooms, soft comfy beds, huge bathrooms with steam showers, and radiant heating in the floor.
The Hotel Alyeska, at Alyeska Mountain Resort, is quite simply the best luxury hotel in Alaska, with well-appointed rooms that include, for example, towel warming racks so guests can ski in off the slopes, bathe, dry off with warm towels, and slip into the plush terrycloth robes provided in each room.
Top singles places? Hunter Mountain in New York State's Catskill Mountains has long been popular with Manhattan and metro area singles. Add to that list Killington and Mount Snow in Vermont - try Cuzzins in the Base Lodge, Breckenridge, Colo., and Mammoth Mountain in Southern California.
