Tubing will be a reality this season at Missouri's Hidden Valley Ski Area, according to General Manager Bill Brandes. The new Snow Sports Center will house the ticket office for the tubing area. The new maintenance facility will allow the snow cats to be kept under roof, and another parking lot is in the works.
"We are pleased and happy that the whole thing has worked out," said the longtime GM. "We had our best year ever last season, and I think the town council is beginning to realize just what we mean to the area. It's a win-win situation now, which is a real big change over the attitude we ran into a couple of years ago."
OnTheSnow reported several years ago about an attempted "land grab" by Wildwood, the little town, where it's located.
The ski area wanted to expand and add a tubing operation, a new maintenance building, and remodel an old golf cart barn into a new Sports Center. The council wanted a piece of Hidden Valley for consideration of the request when the resort initially went before the town council to request permission. Owner Tim Boyd wouldn't go along and threatened to close the area rather than cave into the demand.
Outraged skiers and riders from all over the state and nearby St. Louis organized a Web site, SAVE HV, and gathered petitions to present to the town council. The movement grew, got publicity, and the town council reconsidered its position and approved the project without requiring a piece of the resort last May. Skiers and riders can be a passionate bunch regarding their sport.

HV is holding a shoe drive for Shoeman Water Projects to help provide water to those in need. The project has helped provide needed water to people in Kenya and Haiti. The goal is to collect 10,000 shoes by the end of the month. Barrels are located in front of the Valley's building and at the entrance after hours.
