The preceding day, Teton avalanches caught seven skiers; all survived. Then Friday, South of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, an avalanche in Rock Springs Bowl swept 25-year-old Justin Kautz, from Hartland, Vermont, and two companions over Fat Bastard cliff. The trio were reportedly experienced backcountry skiers, who used Jackson Hole's lifts to access open gates into Bridge-Teton National Forest. Kautz's two companions received minor injuries, but even though Kautz was breathing when rescuers dug him out within five minutes, he shortly died of massive internal injuries, according to Teton County Coroner Bob Campbell. He became North America's seventh avalanche fatality this season, the fifth in the Yellowstone area following the December deaths of four snowmobilers.
