It comes courtesy of the same people that also brought true backcountry skiing to the Midwest with the opening of Mt. Bohemia a few years ago. They took over the skiing operation of the Porkies a couple of seasons ago, and this season opened up a 100-acres of backcountry skiing off a peak just west of Porcupine Mountain ski area; accessed by a snowcat.
They also claim it has close to an 800-foot vertical drop. The cost is $15 for unlimited rides, which is on top of the daily $36 lift ticket. Information at press time was unclear if this is a daily option or just at certain times during the week or season. The Porkies, like Bohemia, have no snowmaking and are dependant on all natural snowfall. It's always wise to check conditions before heading out.
