The show, last of Fred Zedeck's three Pennsylvania expos, will be held Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 at the Plymouth Meeting Mall in Philadelphia's Main Line suburbs. The mall has just undergone a million-dollar renovation.
The Philadelphia show is sponsored by the Eastern Pennsylvania Ski Council, a coalition of 36 member clubs, as well as Jeep/Chrysler.
In addition to equipment, resorts and cars, the Philadelphia show features a ski and snowboard swap.
"Twenty-some years ago I was a colonel in the Pentagon, about to retire. The owner of Ski Chalet in Washington came to me and said did I want to run a ski show. I had been doing a charity auction dinner to raise money for programs for handicapped skiers, Disabled Sports USA. In 1982-83 I got involved and raised a lot of money for Disabled Sports," says Zedeck.
"So I took on the ski show. The first goal was to find a location. I picked a mall.
"People said I was crazy. I said, 'Hey, it's free.' Well, we held the D.C. show in the Boston Common Mall and it was a zoo. We had 40,000 people over the weekend. We were busy for three straight days," he said.
That set the pattern for Zedeck's ski and snowboard expos for the next two decades, all in malls, all free, and all offering a first glimpse of the winters ahead.
Zedeck's traveling road show leaves Pennsylvania for the nation's capital, combining Nov. 7-9 with the Northern Virginia/DC Travel Show.
