Resorts in this article: Powder Mountain
Forward thinking resorts are doing what they can to get children skiing and riding. Powder Mountain has just devised the Boys and Girls Club Powder Pack program to provide kids with everything they need to learn to ride or ski. An anonymous donor contributed enough new winter clothing and equipment to open a free winter rental shop for underprivileged youth.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Weber-Davis will soon introduce young riders to the mountains, along with Powder Mountain. Club members from the ages of 16 to 18 will visit the slopes once a week during January with Powder Mountain gifting on-snow instruction, lift passes, and any additional equipment.
"Most of our youth would never have the opportunity to learn a winter sport, " said Jimmy Bokinskie, the Boys & Girls Clubs High School Outreach Director . "This is an exciting addition to our after-school program. It will teach important life skills and give them a new outlet for recreation and fitness."
According to Angie Illum, Powder Mountain's director of administration, "After four lessons, [the kids] will have mastered the basics of the sport and that will result in increased confidence and pride."
Too few resorts get the credit they deserve for these important local programs.
