North Cascades Heli, the Mazama, Wash.-based heli-skiing outfit, and North Cascades Mountain Guides are joining forces to conduct a Level 2 avalanche training course Feb. 6-9.
The course will be based out of the North Cascades Heli yurt at Windy Pass near Indiana basin, high in the North Cascades. This location will allow instructors and participants to work indoors in the morning and tour in the afternoon.
The four-day course will cover such topics as snow metamorphism, standard gluidelines for observation and recording of weather, snow pack and avalanches, stability tests and analyses, and decision making.
Prospective students should have successfully completed an American Institute of Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE) Level 2 or equivalent course and should be of intermediate or better ability on Telemark or Alpine touring gear or snowboards.
As a bonus, the course's backcountry location will allow participants to indulge in opportunities for some great skiing and riding.
Due to the cost of the heli flight, the organizers will need four or eight participants to allow the course to run at the advertised price of $1,200, which covers helicopter transportation, student manual, instruction/training, lodging during the course, and all meals.
