A woman who reportedly collided with a leading German political figure is dead, while he is in artificially induced coma, according to Associated Press reports out of Austria.
The accident occurred New Year's Day at the Riesneralm ski area in Upper Styria. The politician is Dierter Althaus, 50, premier of the Thueringen, a German free state. Austrian privacy laws require the woman's name to be kept private. The AP report says Althaus was flown to a hospital in Schwarzach by helicopter.
Orthopedic surgeon Christoph Collersbeck told the wire service Althaus suffered injuries to the skull and brain, with minor bleeding in the brain. He said the man's injuries do not seem to be life threatening.
