Telluride is well-noted and well-regarded for a number of things, no less its variety of culinary options, both in town and at the mountain village.
But newcomers and old hands alike will delight in discovering a couple of dining establishments that have made their way on to the hill for this winter.
High up on the mountain - at an altitude of 12,000 feet - sits Alpino Vino, a European-style hut near the top of Gold Hill. The cozy eatery is heated by wood-burning fireplace, seats 28 diners inside and 18 outside, and offers spectacular views of the surrounding San Juan Mountains.
The menu - which includes cheese, soups, sandwiches, and appetizer plates -- is Italian themed, but not exclusively Italian in offerings. There is also a global wine list, several flights, and more than 20 wines by the glass.
The lunch-only Alpino Vino is open from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Lower down at the Mountain Village you'll find the new and much larger Hop Garden, which offers craft beers from around the world amidst surroundings fresh out of a European beer garden. Its menu is highlighted by the Skier's Union burger (which is a blend of sirloin, tenderloin and ribeye beef cuts) and the Giant Pretzel (which is imported from Germany and is served with sweet mustard and Obatzer cheese spread).
The Hop Garden opens daily at 11 a.m., serves both lunch and dinner seatings and features après-ski specials from 3 to 6 p.m. every day.
