Walking around the base of Mont Blanc - Europe's highest mountain - may not be as impressive as climbing it, but it's an experience you'll never forget.
The notorious Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) is a 200km loop around the base of this iconic mountain. The 10-day expedition (based on 6hrs walking a day) takes you through three countries (Switzerland, Italy and France). Along the way you'll pass some of the most stunning alpine scenery, not to mention indulging in the delicious draft beer and fondue.
Each year, 10,000 hikers follow the loop which takes you passed idyllic hamlets, alpine meadows and mountain streams. There are plenty of overnight refuges along the way with warm beds and homecooked dinners.
The GR grande randonnée major hike is suitable for trained hill-walkers who are used to hiking on varied terrain, carrying a heavy back-pack. It is strongly recommended that inexperienced hill-walkers join a club or a group led by a mountain leader.
After finishing the loop, be sure to take the cable car up from Chamonix, France or Courmayer, Italy to see the spectacular views from the top of the mountain you've just walked around.
