Bumper snowfalls are expected in the Alps this weekend, with a metre of snow forecast for France, Italy and Switzerland and half a metre for Austria.
Tomorrow (Sat, Nov. 15) will bring the heaviest snow dumps with nearly 80cm to France’s northern alpine resorts of Les 2 Alpes and Alpe d’Huez. The snow will continue Sunday and Monday, bringing the 3-day total to a whopping metre of powder.

Ski openings: Tignes’ Grande Motte glacier is the only skiable area in France right now (6 lifts open/40cm of snow). But next weekend will see Val Thorens kick off its season (Nov. 22) with the Ski Force Winter Tour. The following weekend (Nov. 29) Les 2 Alpes and the Espace Killy ski area (Val d’Isere and Tignes) open their doors to skiers. See all projected openings in France.

Ski openings: Four Italian ski resorts are currently open: Cervinia-Breuil (8 lifts open/185cm snow); Val Senales (6 lifts open/205cm snow); Solda (4 lifts open/75cm snow); and Ghiacciaio Presena (4 lifts open/150cm snow). Ski openings: Austria currently has 10 ski resorts open – the highest number in the world. The largest open ski areas include the Stubai glacier (17 lifts open/105cm snow); Solden (14 lifts open/142cm snow); Obergurgl-Hochgurgl (13 lifts open/60cm snow); Kitzsteinhorn Kaprun (12 lifts open/150cm snow); and Hintertux glacier (11 lifts open/185cm snow). Ski openings: Switzerland currently has nine ski resorts open. Davos Klosters opened yesterday (5 lifts open/50cm snow). The biggest Swiss ski area running is Zermatt (17 lifts open/130cm snow). Other open resorts include Saas Fee (5 lifts open/270cm snow), Laax (6 lifts open/120cm snow), Gstaad Mountain Rides (5 lifts open/50cm snow) and Engadin St. Moritz (2 lifts open/75cm snow). 3-day snow forecast: Colorado resorts are still enjoying the 40cm of snow received in the last couple of days, but there’s more on the way over the next three days across the country: 27cm in Alyeska Resort, 19cm in Steamboat, 17cm in Boyne Highlands and Jiminy Peak, 16cm in Stratton Mtn, 15cm in Telluride, 11cm in Crested Butte and Monarch Mtn, and 9cm in Beaver Creek and Copper Mtn. Ski openings: Eight US ski resorts are open for skiing at present and some of the best conditions can be found in Colorado – Arapahoe Basin (3 lifts open/46cm snow), Copper Mountain Resort (3 lifts open/46cm snow), Keystone (4 lifts open/23cm snow), Loveland (1 lift open/46cm snow), and Wolf Creek (3 lifts open/15cm snow). CANADA – Just a smattering of snow for Canadian resorts this weekend, with the most (8-9cm) in Quebec. Banff-Lake Louise ski resorts were scheduled to open this weekend, but there’s not enough snow yet.
BULGARIA – Expecting first snow of the season on Monday (Nov. 17) with 2cm in Bansko and Borovets. Both resorts are scheduled to open Dec. 6.
ANDORRA – The Andorran resorts of Grandvalira and Vallnord are just expecting a dusting of snow this weekend (1cm), but both are scheduled to open Nov. 29.
SPAIN – It’s snowing around 20cm in Sierra Nevada today and the webcam shows whiteout conditions. More snow is on the way over the weekend, with a 3-day snow forecast of: 35cm in Astun and Candanchu, 24cm in Formigal and Panticosa, 11cm in Manzaneda and 5cm in Cerler and Alto Campoo.
