Substantial snow dumps have been reported across Europe this weekend, particularly in France where more than a metre has fallen in the last 48 hours. This is fantastic news, particularly for low altitude resorts which have been struggling to kick off the ski season.

The heaviest dumps have been reported in the northern French Alps and Pyrenees, but even the more southerly alpine ski resorts have seen some much-needed snow this weekend. Some of the biggest snowfalls in the last 48 hours were reported the alpine resorts of Bramens (105cm), La Plagne (70cm), Megeve (60cm), Chamonix (58cm), Val d'Isere (55cm), Morzine (55cm), Courchevel (45cm) and Avoriaz (45cm). And some of the biggest snowfalls in the Pyrenees were seen at Formigueres (85cm) and Cauterets (80cm). Another 10cm or so is forecast for the French Pyrenees today (Dec. 29).

The snow started on Boxing Day and has continued on and off ever since. Among the biggest snow dumps over the last three days have been recorded in Silvretta Montafon (50cm), Lech-Zuers (50cm), St. Anton am Arlberg (45cm) and Innsbrucker Nordkettenbahnen (40cm). Austrian ski resorts are forecast another 30cm of snow over the next two days (Dec. 29-30), including Obergurgl-Hochgurgl, Solden and Lech-Zuers.

It snowed heavily pretty much all day yesterday in the Italian Alps, with some of the biggest dumps reported in Ovindoli (90cm), Sestriere (40cm), Sauze d'Oulx (30cm), Pila (30cm), La Thuile (30cm), Claviere (30cm) and Courmayeur (20cm). Another 20cm is forecast for Italian ski resorts over the next two days (Dec. 29-30) with the heaviest snow expected in Sudtirol.

The weekend has also been a white one for Swiss ski resorts. Some of the biggest snowfalls were recorded in Champex-Lac (70cm), Verbier (56cm), Nendaz (55cm), Crans Montana (50cm) and Villars-Gryon (46cm). Another 25-30cm of snow is forecast for Switzerland over the next 48 hours (Dec. 29-30), including Anzere, Grindelwald, Engelberg, Murren and Andermatt-Sedrun.
