Some light-to-moderate snow has fallen in the Alps this week, freshening slope conditions, but even better news is on the way  . . . widespread, heavy snow is expected over the weekend for France, Austria, Italy and Switzerland. And, unlike the snowfall after Christmas, this time even the resorts in the Southern Alps of France and Italy are in for BIG powder dumps.


France has seen some moderate snowfall this week, with 10-30cm in the last 3 days for Chamonix, Val d’Isere, Avoriaz, La Rosiere, Tignes, Val Thorens, Flaine, Morzine and La Plagne. Numerous others ski resorts got a few cm which freshened conditions. See full France snow report.

Some of the best skiing conditions in France can currently be found in Val Thorens (90-130cm), Orelle (75-130cm), Flaine (35-120cm), Tignes/Val d’Isere (46-100cm) and Avoriaz (10-100cm). See all France base depths.

France 3-day snow forecast: It’s great news for most French resorts! Huge snow dumps are expected Friday and Saturday (Jan. 16-17), with some of the biggest forecast in the Southern French Alps – where it’s needed most.  Over the next 2 days: 75cm for Les 2 Alpes, Isola 2000 and Alpe d’huez; 50cm for La Clusaz, Avoriaz and Morzine; 40cm for Chamonix, Megeve and Les Gets; and 35cm for Val Thorens, Val d’Isere, La Tania, Serre Chevalier, La Plagne, Tignes, Courchevel and Meribel. Austria has had similar snowfalls to France this week, with 30cm in Kleinwalsertal and 10cm in Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang, Solden, Galtur-Silvretta, Alpbachtal, Obertauern, Silvretta Montafon. A few cm was recorded in many other resorts. See full Austria snow report

The best skiing conditions in Austria can be found on the glaciers followed by Obertauern (100-140cm), Flachau (60-135cm) and Obergurgl-Hochgurgl (35-130cm). See all Austria base depths.

Austria 3-day snow forecast: Some serious snowfall is on its way to Austria, with the heaviest dumps expected on Saturday Jan. 17: 88cm for Nassfeld; 55cm for Obergurgl-Hochgurgl and Solden; 50cm for Bad Gastein, Stubai glacier and Molltaler glacier; 30cm for Schladming, Axamer-Litzum, Seefeld, Nauders, Kuhtai, Flachau and Obertauern; and 20cm for Ischgl, Lech-Zuers, Mayrhofen, St. Anton and Zell am See. Italian ski resorts have had just a sprinkling of snow this week, with 10-15cm in Arabba Marmolada, Courmayeur, Val Gardena, Alta Pusteria and Merano 2000. See full Italy snow report.

Italy 3-day snow forecast: Some huge snowfalls are expected in Italy over the next 3 days: 127cm for Madesimo; 70cm for Livigno, Adamello Ski and Sella Nevea-Kanin; 60cm for Bormio and Madonna di Campiglio; 30cm for Cervinia-Breuil and Valtournenche and Val Gardena; 25cm for Cortina d’Ampezzo, Alta Badia, Kronplatz; and 10cm for Sestriere, Bardonecchia, Claviere and Sauze d’Oulx. Like Italy, Swiss ski resorts have seen some light snow this week with some of the heaviest dumps in Valais: 24cm in Les Marecottes, 9cm in Crans Montana, 12cm in La Fouly, 5cm in Leukerbad. See full Switzerland snow report.

Some of the best skiing in the country can be found in Skiarena Andermatt-Sedrun (22-310cm), Saas Fee (20-210cm), Laax (35-170cm) and Melchsee-Frutt (80-140cm). See all Switzerland snow depths.

Ski conditions are good with ample snow depths and sunny skies: Bansko (30-110cm), Borovets (65-65cm), and Pamporovo (25-35cm). No new snow is in the forecast.
