Substantial snowfalls over the last week have greatly improved conditions across the Alps. Some of the heaviest dumps have been in Italy, with 170cm in 7 days, but more than a metre has also fallen in France and Switzerland. A mixture of sunshine and light snow is forecast this weekend in the big four.

Italy has had a bumper week of snowfall. Over the last 7 days: 165cm in Aprica, 145cm in Madesimo, 140cm in Arabba Marmolada, 80cm in Bormio, 65cm in Madonna di Campiglio, 60cm in Bardonecchia and Livigno, 55cm in Cortina d’Ampezzo and Cervinia-Breuil, and 50cm in Sestriere and Sauze d’Oulx. Great snow conditions are reported across the country. Some of the best skiing can be found in Cervinia-Breuil (60-170cm), Livigno (63-166cm), Madonna di Campiglio (50-150cm) and Bardonecchia (50-120cm). See full list of Italy resort snow depths.

Italy 3-day snow forecast: Over the next 3 days, more than half a metre is expected in the southern Abruzzo region, with the vast majority falling on Friday, Dec. 23. The more northerly resorts of Courmayeur, Cervinia-Breuil, Bardonecchia and La Thuile will get 5-10cm. See full Italy snow forecast.

In the last 7 days, more than a metre of snow has fallen in La Grave la Meije, Les Brasses, Passy, Les Haberes and Ventoux. And a very respectable 60-70cm has been recorded in Avoriaz, Auron, Morzine, Les Gets and Isola 2000. See full France snow report.

Conditions are general good across the French Alps, with some of the best skiing to be found in the Three Valleys resorts of Val Thorens (90-130cm), Les Menuires (52-112cm), Courchevel  (51-86cm) and Meribel (40-85). France 3-day snow forecast: Some moderate snow is forecast for the French Alps over the weekend with the heaviest dumps on Sunday Jan. 25. Over the 3 days: 36cm is forecast for Autrans, 19cm for St. Jean d’Aulps, 18cm for Abondance, 17cm for Avoriaz, 16cm for Morzine, 13cm for Les Gets, 10cm for Chamonix and La Clusaz. Austria has seen a mixture of sunshine and snow this week. Over the last 7 days: 50cm in Silvretta Montafon, 40cm in Zell am Ziller, 35cm in Bad Gastein, 30cm in Zell am See and Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang, 25cm in Axamer Lizum, 20cm in Lech-Zuers, Mayrhofen, and 15cm in Ischgl, St. Anton and Solden. Conditions are excellent on the glaciers, but the skiing is also very good lower down, particularly in St. Anton am Arlberg (25-175cm), Obergurgl –Hochgurgl (40-150cm), Obertauern (100-140cm) and Lech-Zuers (50-105cm). See full list of Austria resort snow depths.

Austria 3-day snow forecast: The weekend is looking predominantly sunny with a few light snowfalls. Over the next 3 days:  16cm in Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang and Obertauern and  15cm in Kitzbuehel, St. Johann in Tirol, Lech-Zuers and St. Anton. See full Austria snow forecast.


Conditions in Switzerland have greatly improved this week with around half a metre of snow for Laax, Elm, Adelboden and Arosa over the last 7 days. 30cm has also been clocked up in Engelberg, Rigi and Melchsee-Frutt. See full Switzerland snow report.

Some of the best skiing can be found in Engelberg (50-345cm), Laax (50-250cm), Saas Fee (34-240cm) and St. Moritz (35-145cm). The latter two also have excellent off-piste. See full Switzerland snow report.

Snow forecast: Some light-to-moderate snow is forecast over the weekend. Around 15cm is expected in Grindelwald, Wengen, Engelberg, Murren, Elm and Andermatt. See full Switzerland snow forecast.


Andorran resorts welcomed 10cm of snow this week, freshening pistes nicely. Currently conditions are good across all resorts: Vallnord/Arcalis (75-120cm), Vallnord/Pal-Arinsal (45-75cm) and Grandvalira (50-100cm). No new snow is in the forecast over the weekend.


Bulgarian resorts have been bathed in sun most of the week with no new snow. Conditions are best in the two leading resorts of Bansko (30-110cm) and Borovets (65-65cm). Some light snow is forecast for the weekend which will be most welcome as pistes have become hard packed.
