Half-term week in the mountains has been a winner thanks to the heavy snowfalls of last week followed by beautiful sunny skies. Slopes across Europe are faring well, despite the busy half-term crowds. Some of the best conditions can be found in the Pyrenees and the Italian and French Alps. Snow clouds will replace the sunshine again this weekend, with the heaviest powder dumps forecast for the French Pyrenees and French Alps.


Skiing conditions are very good across the country, particularly in the French Pyrenees, where around half a metre has fallen this week. The French Alps has been bathed in sunshine all week, softening lower slopes, but skiing is still very good higher up the mountain. See current snow depths for all French ski resorts.

More than half a metre of snow is forecast for France this weekend, with the heaviest dumps in the French Pyrenees: 70cm for Gourette, La Mongie and Cauterets; 50cm for La Clusaz, Avoriaz, Morzine, Flaine, Alpe d’huez, Les 2 Alpes, Les Gets; 40cm Chamonix and Megeve, and 30cm for La Plagne, Meribel, Val Thorens, Les Arcs, Les Menuires, Montgenevre, La Rosiere, Val d’Isere and Tignes. Austrian resorts haven’t seen as much snow in the last week or two as its neighbours, and the strong sunshine has softened pistes. But good skiing can still be found at higher ground – above 2500m is best. See current snow depths for all Austrian ski resorts.

Austria is also forecast snow this weekend, but not as much as its French neighbour: 20cm for Obergurgl-Hochgurgl and Solden; 15cm for Lech-Zuers, Mayrhofen and Silvretta Montafon; and 14cm for St. Anton, Ischgl, Galtur and Axamer-Lizum.

The sunny weather across Switzerland this week has softened some lower slopes, but there’s still plenty of great skiing to be had, particularly in resorts with the most recent snowfall like Zermatt and Saas-Fee. See current snow depths for all Swiss ski resorts.

Switzerland is to receive a similar amount of snow as Italy this weekend: 36cm for Skiarena Andermatt-Sedrun; 33cm for Savognin; and 29cm for Engadin St. Moritz, Elm, Saas-Fee, St. Mortiz, Laax, and Engelberg. See full Switzerland snow forecast here.
