Aspen Mountain is hosting more than just Thanksgiving skiers and riders for the opening week of the mountain. The best female ski racers in the world will be competing on Ajax Nov. 28-29 for the 2009 Aspen Winternational Women's FIS Alpine World Cup. This is an added bonus for anyone considering a trip to the Aspen area for the holidays.

The women's World Cup racers are much more laid back and accessible for autographs than other World Cup races. It's a thrill to hang at the base of the mountain and see the world's best ski racers in action. You can have a front row seat by hiking up along the course while millions of fans are watching the Aspen Winternational live in Europe. There are bleachers and you can see the action on the Jumbotron big screen after they whiz by you.

You'll see skiers like two-time World Cup overall champion Lindsey Vonn of Vail, the reigning Olympic giant slalom gold medalist Julia Mancuso of Olympic Valley, Calif., and the U.S. Ski Team. Consider it a preview of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

"Aspen is such an incredible venue for racing," said Vonn, who became the most successful female skier in U.S. history last season. "The crowd there is always so supportive of all racers. I love seeing all the young racers with posters. We get such a boost racing in front of a hometown crowd. I'm hoping Vancouver feels just like Aspen."

Festivities will continue in town throughout the Thanksgiving holiday. Both Aspen and Snowmass are scheduled to open Thanksgiving Day. The ski racing action begins Saturday, Nov. 28, with the giant slalom followed by the slalom on Sunday.

    What's to revise? More opportunities + more variables = more chances to lose. Ski events that happen far more often than every 4 years are arguably a higher standard, though inarguably less desirable. And unless you believe in zombies, Lawrence isn't about to stake claims on who the best is anytime soon.

    By the way, the word is "comParable."

    UH-HMM...........To my knowledge, the late Andrea Mead Lawrence is still the most successful female skier in U.S. history, being the only American female skier to ever win two GOLD medals in the same Winter Olympics Games (Oslo, 1952), which is still the benchmark of ski champions and the winter sports industry. The World Cup Race circuit has too many more opportunities and variables to be considered as "comarable" and the Winter Olympics have been around much longer as the "established standard." I'd advise revising your story above based upon the results at the Whistler Games this Winter. Maybe then Ms. Vonn can possibly tie or become "the most successful female skier in U.S. history" if she in fact earns 2-3 GOLD medals therein. Until then, Andrea Mead Lawrence will always be my ideal female ski champ!
