Canazei has grown a lot from my first visit and now stretches for about a mile down the road between lift stations, although it still has a compact centre which is quite pretty and choc full of lively bars and restaurats. You can ski back down to this central part of the resort at the end of the day (it gets busy) and pile in to the apres ski bar. The locals are friendly and there's a great atmosphere. We stayed out of the centre and close to the main lift up to the ski area which saved us having to get the ski bus or find somewhere to park the rental car. The skiing was great, you could go either way round the Sella Ronda which is this circuit of lifts and runs around the big Sella mountain. It goes on for about 15 miles (24km) linking up resorts and valleys so you can ski right down in to Val Gardena if you like or ski around Alta Badia. I guess it is like ski touring, which I never tried, but without the effort - feels great to ski on from place to place and because you're going in a circuit you never have to head back. Most of the runs are fast easy or moderate cruisers so you can do the circuit in a few hours if you want to motor. The scenery of the Dolomites is beautiful and spectacular.
Friendly, great skiing, nice people, good food
Bit fragmented base, you may be some distance from lifts/centre if not careful.

When I started skiing I never really considered the Dolomites for a ski trip. I had an image of a tiny ski area for beginners and bargain hunters, that ranked along side Bulgaria and Andorra. Well, I was wrong (I was also wrong about Andorra, but that's another review I may put fingers to keyboard about). Canazei, in Val Di Fassa, has access to one of the largest continuous ski areas in the world and the area pass covers more ski area than anywhere else in the world. There is a lot of skiing here and you probably wouldn't cover it all in a lifetime of ski holidays. Most people who go to this area have done a bit of research and want to ski the Sella Ronda. This is 26 mile circuit around the Sella Massif. You can go clockwise or anticlockwise. This route can get busy at times but it also gives you access to the numerous other ski areas. Just make sure you are back in the Canazei bowl before the lifts close. Taxi prices go up at this point. There is so much variety available that you could never get bored here. And there are lots of great on slope bars and restaurants, including a go go bar, for drinks and food. The other thing you never tire of is the scenery, the Dolomites (Italian mountains named by the English after a Frenchman) are the most spectacular mountains in the world. They are a photographers delight and the way the colours of the mountains change during the day is mesmerising. Canazei itself is a pleasant town. The locals are friendly and speak their own dialect, Ladin - just say "Bon Di" and they'll love you. The Rose Garden is probably the best apres bar, get a pizza in the Kaiser Stube and then head to Lieber Augustine for the nail game. You also get a wide variety of nationalities skiing this area. Canazei is the favoured resort for Danish skiiers. It's good to ski somewhere you actually feel as though you are abroad. No plummy Brit accents to be heard. Canazei would suit any skiier, or boarder. Loads of terrain and lots of fun.
