For early dec Axamer Lizum has provided, two days 20cm fresh powder each. While not the largest resort their is alot of different terrain, you can take the long easy run to the bottom or go off piste straight down into a valley around the valley, through trees, or go past the avalanche sign and hold on. The train lift is cool, you got 5 or 15min to reach the bottom (700m), we usually had a break then get in with a minute and straight up. Got sum cuts on the boards, but that was poor choice on my part. Hiked a few hundred meters with some locals to this steep drop into small bowl, that opens right out once your through. Very Nice (photo). Nightlife I stayed in Innsbruck, it was slow.
Bigger then it looks with Great terrain, No ques, easy to get to backcountry
Sketchy at the bottom, Too eary for park and all lifts, 45min from Innsbruck central
Very interesting ski area. It was the former area of the olympic wintergames in Innsbruck. From Innsbruck you are very quickly in the Lizum. There run several buses and you have good parking possibilities. You will find all different kind of slopes from beginner to expert. Most of the slopes are red ones. There is also a lot of freeride space in the Lizum. Most time of the year the snow conditions are pretty good because the area is mainly in the shadow of the mountains but therefore it can be also quite cold on some days. They also offer a small funpark but more beginner lines. Additionally you will find opportunities for bobsleighing. There are some après ski bars but not much ongoing. Most of the people go straight back to Innsbruck because there are also no shops and only some hotels. Because Innsbruck is so near you can go to party there all the night. Also you have the possibility to change to other areas because Innsbruck is surrounded by many different skiing areas.
snow safe, near to Innsbruck
cold shadow area

We stayed in Innsbruck at Easter-time and had a great time. I was surprised to see one reviewer saying it took an hour from his hotel to Axamer Lizum as for us it only took half that at most and we were also staying in central Innsbruck. I's a great set up really as you can stay very cheaply in a nice four or five star hotel as they're busier in the summer, so unlike most ski resorts they have over capacity in winter which drives the price down. Then a nice big bus picks ypou up each morning outside the hotel and you have a nice scenic drive through beautiful Innsbruck up to the ski slopes. You have a choice of different areas as there are about eight on the pass but we especially liked Axamer Lizum - there were wide open slopes, and the long red Women's dopwnhill race course from the Olympics when they were staged here is a great fast cruiser. It's one of the places I'd love to go back to. Then the bus collected you in the afternoon, you had a nice swim, sauna and hot tub in the hotel spa and then you had the city size facilities of Innsbruck for apres ski - superb!
Great hotels, hotel to slopes bus service, city centre apres ski
Inconvenience of bus ride to the slopes might annoy some
I visited Innsbruck the week of New Years in 2005 and skiied a couple of days at Axamer Lizum. It was about an hour bus ride from the town center to the ski area. The buses are new and comfortable, but no one wants to ride a bus for an hour to the ski area. There is no base area of town where the mountain begins. There are towns that surround the ski area, but there is only a parking lot, a tick shack and 2 lifts at the base are. With no base area, you can't have any apres ski or nightlife, but being connected to a major city like Innsbruck allows you to have some delayed nightlife. Once you make your way to the mid point of the mountain, it opens into a beautiful bowl with several lifts that take you to a variety of terrain. One interesting feature of the Axamer Lizum area is the elevated funicular that runs up the middle of the bowl from the base area to the peak. At the peak of the mountain is an excellent restaurant with striking modern architecture. Despite being very cold and heavily overcast, there was very soft snow with very little ice. The main drawback of the entire Innsbruck area is the lack of interconnectivity of the ski areas. The bus system makes it easy to get to each area; however, each area is so small. At all of the areas that I skiied in the Innsbruck area, you would not want to spend more than 2 days at because it would become so repetetive. Axamer Lizum is good ski resort for those who enjoy skiing, but need the big city attactions that Innsbruck allows.
Largest and Most Challenging Area Near Innsbruck
Not Very Big & Far From Innsbruck
great little resort, with a brilliant Restaurant at the summit. Good for 3days max, however after that the slopes will be similar, for all the slopes to be open a good amount of snow is needed!
Axamer Lizum is not a large ski area by Alps standards. The skiing is excellent. Good cruiser runs with a relativley steep pitch. The scenery is just wonderful. The restaurants are excellent, but that comes as no surprise for Austria. Great place for a couple of days, but not recommended for a week destination.
