We arrived Friday lunchtime - pretty much everything was closed, including, frustratingly, the ski-hire shop. This opens at 3pm, thus putting paid to my plans for an extra afternoon's skiing. The village is very quiet – a pleasant little place with great scenic views, set about 1km back from the main road. The lifts are on the other side of that main road – you can take the free bus down or ski down, but you have to take the bus back up again. Saturday and Sunday were very busy up the mountain with locals streaming up from the valley. Scheffau has a huge car park at the foot of the mountain, with two gondolas up to the main altitude area at Brandstadl. The 4 man gondola seemed quieter than the 8 man gondola – plus it’s just near the bottom of the village run, so we took that one most days. From Brandstadl you can ski down a couple of red runs which end up at the Südhang lift and back up, or traverse across to the left and into the main circuit, with blues and red going to Ellmau and Brixen. The lifts and pistes of the Skiwelt area aren’t named on the piste map, just numbered – but the lifts at least do have names, if only on the lifts themselves. I found this a bit disconcerting. The pistes blur into each other, especially when we were there and people had skied down the snow between pistes so that it was hard to see the edges. The piste markes are mostly marked with numbers and arrows rather than giving any indication of where you are. It was bright sunshine almost all week – I’m not sure I would have been able to find my way around in a whiteout. The piste map is much more interested in telling you about the mountain restaurants than the lifts and pistes. And the mountain restaurants were nice – even the big self service places were built from pine and looked like they had been there for years – a far cry from the brutalist béton vision of French mountain architecture. Lots of table service places – I especially enjoyed the Ripperl (rack of ribs) at the Rübezahlalm, even if the sun vanished behind the mountain while I was eating it. Pretty much all the skiing can be tackled by an intermediate (that’s me). The reds are a bit more difficult than the blues, but they won’t cause you many worries. There aren’t many blacks around. Pretty much everywhere you ski is wide and open, with a few blue roads taking you back down to the valley, or cutting from one area to the next. The village of Scheffau is one of about half a dozen around the SkiWelt slopes – Söll is notorious for Brits on the piss, but my wife wouldn’t let me go there. Westendorf, Brixen and Ellmau all seem nice; Hopfgarten looks nice from the mountain, horrid if you drive past on the road. As for Scheffau itself, resort charm – lots. Night life? Null points. The Gasthof Weberbauer was nice for a meal – non-smoking bar, and restaurant. After dinner you can play liar dice. Er, that’s it. There is a bar up the road – I never saw more than four customers.
Easy access to lots of skiing with nice restaurants
Quiet, quiet, quiet
Just back from Scheffau, went with 2 kids 2 years and 9 years and my wife. All beginers except myself. Booked with Crystal (another days story). Stayed at the land alpin hotel, food was good. We took lessons with the Ingrid Slavemooser ski school. Very small class sizes and expert tuition. The Crystal recomended ski school had up to 15 + in classes. Ski hire we did with the hotel and as we didnt pre-book we got a 5% discount very reasonable. The creche in the hotel was not great so I brought our youngest up the mountain with us everyday to the tourist office run creche, very nice staff and runs from 9 to 4 ( he got to ski everyday for lunch time in the kinderkaiser land opposite creche). If you are a beginner this is a good area to learn, if you are an intermediate then its paradise lots of challenging reds and some lovely crusing blues. You can ski to a different resort everyday if you wish. The homerun down to the gondala in Scheffau is not for the faint of heart. Very icy when we were there.
Great for families
Nightlife not really hopping
Have been to Scheffau 4 times with Minster Travel Service. Really great place for the kids to learn to ski and stayed in gorgeous chalet close to lifts. No real night life but food at Wilden Kaiser is fantastic and after covering such a large ski area in a day, good food and wine is all that's required. Personal service from MTS was second to none.
we are just back from our second trip to Scheffau, staying at the Alpin. We were beginners last year and essentially learnt to ski on ice, the conditions were so poor. This year however was amazing!!! As all the others mention, the skiing area is vast and had something for us all!!! There is zilch apres ski, which is disappointing for those who want a bit of action. Me, a couple of glasses of wine with my dinner with the fab grub in the lovely Alpin and I am happy to go off to bed at 11!!! Our kids (7&9) adore the hotel, the pool and the fun. it is really kid friendly and they have really progessed at skiing. Am already looking forward to next year!
For many of us it was our first ski trip, although a few members had skied Canada for a season. We travelled to Scheffau from South Africa and arrived at a pictureque Austrian village - the type you'd find on a post card. We stayed at a privately run chalet - Chalet Heidi, which was a fantastic place. Run by an English couple, Mike and Caroline, it was the perfect chalet - friendly, excellent food, large and very comfortable. Our hosts could not do enough for us. We were lucky with the snow! The village was green when we arrived but we sang songs to help it snow - and it did, almost a metre overnight. The skiing was excellent, a vast resort with skiing for all abilities in our group. There were no lift queues and loads of Tirolean mountain restaurants (very reasonably priced) The experiened skiers amoungst us had some good off-piste skiing in the deep new snow. The lift system was very modern and went for ever in all directions! Apres ski was amazing in the red-bull bar at the foot of the gondola. Late night apres-ski doesn't really exist in Scheffau but we didn't care. Chalet Heidi pr0vided us with nightly entertainment! All in all Scheffau and Chalet Heidi provided us with an amazing ski trip.
Hi, just returned from a week in Scheffau staying at the Alpin. Had a very enjoyable week despite the conditions, although they did really well in the resort keeping the runs open considering the lack of snow. Thought the Alpin an excellent place to stay with children, good value and very comfortable. We stayed in the annexe with the pool and restaurant. Our room was comfortable and it was a pleasure to have a bath after a day on the slopes - although the bathroom was very old and did smell like a mens toilet which we weren't too pleased about! I think they have updated all the furniture as this was new, but the carpet was dirty and the bathroom pretty grotty.(although I have seen worse). Scheffau itself is pretty, but very quiet, there is no apres ski really so I don't think I would return because of that. Brilliant place if you have little ones as there is a nursery on site. Don't use the hire shop under the Alpin, the equipment is rubbish compared with stuff I have hired before. I was even given two different sized boots, so when we got to the slopes the skis wouldn't fit!! then they didn't have another set of boots for me - I'm a size 5.5, hardly unusual! There is a better hire shop at the bottom of the gondola, similar prices and much more professional - and staff more helpful! The lift systems are excellent and very efficient, our two children went in ski school, which again was very good and highly recommended. All in all, a good holiday, but preferred Soll as there is more going on. We stayed in the Tyrol last year which was a much higher style and class of hotel for the same money.
Group of 12 mixed level skiers stayed at Waldrand hotel in Scheffau from 13 to 20th Jan 2007. Resort is very quiet with the hotel basic, clean but very welcoming. The snow conditions were pretty poor, like everywhere else, but have to complement the way they kept so much running. Most other neighbouring resorts were virtually closed so well done Scheffau. We will return to this ski area but not to the resort - it is too quiet for us. Not so sure I agree that this is a good beginner resort but we did not have lessons so perhaps we should not judge. Better to go to Soll or Ellmau for livelier resorts.
Stayed 13th till 20th Jan 07. Stayed land alpine hotel 4*, excellent from rooms to food, spottless hotel everywhere, spa not extensive but relaxing needs a jacquzzi i reckon. We recommend staying in building with pool if you have kids. Bus shuttle outside hotel goes every 20mins to gondala, not a problem Poor snow conditions, runs kept exceptionally well considering lack of white stuff. Restaurants great on pisten not expensive, great for all levels of skiers. Ski school/equipment book there & lift passes we paid over the odds going with crystal. Going back in March with friends will definately go back same hotel and Scheffau.
Looking forward to returning to Scheffau at the end of the month for the 4th year in a row. As a beginner, I could not fault the facilities and the varied pistes available. As my skiing ability improves, scheffau grows with me and with 250km of piste to discover, I believe it will grow with me for many years to come. Always been very fortunate with the snow and am desperately keeping everything crossed that this year won't be any diffrerent. Have to agree with previous post in saying that the apres ski is nothing amazing however after a hard day skiing it serves beer and gluvine....so what more can you ask for. Tend to stay about 15 minutes away from scheffau, which allows us to ski over to the facilities through soll and once again must say...I can't wait to get back !
Scheffau is a very different type of Austrian Ski Holiday. Far from the large towns and bars Scheffau is a village that is still Austrian. The main village is located about a mile from the lifts, however the free ski bus runs often and is free. The lift system is great with people staying loccaly getting a VIP pass allwing them to get on the gondalas quicker. The skiing is varied and allows the skiier the choice of a wide variety of runs, all brilliantly kept up by the resort. The Apres Ski is limited to a series of home run bars and a small Austrian pub in the main village. Other activities, well worth doing, are avalible locally. The Ski school is excellent and is especially good for the long children. Overall better for the quiet skier Scheffau offers a great experience, but if you want Apres Ski choose a larger resoret.
