One of the best resorts in the Alps. Not served by English ski companies so little known. Welcoming locals, great mountain food, and some excellent hotels such as the Gabriella.
Uncrowded, little English spoken, great mix of mountain and tree skiing, superb lift system, challenging blacks, great Apres-ski
None worthy of mention

Spent only a couple of days in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis in spring-2010. It was a poor snow year in northern Austria by all acounts, and so the base had some limited access problems. Having said that, the mountains are high enough up, that once in the gondolas, you soon find plenty to sink your teeth into. 3 resorts, spread across the length of a valley has pros and cons - variety, a change in scenery, but also provide for some issues remaining in contact with group members, and also dilutes the atmosphere a little. Plenty of varied terrain, with enough of the hard stuff, mixed in with easier cruisers, to suit most recreational types, and those seeking more of a thrill ride. A couple of decent terrain parks for the boarders. A solid family place for sure, and enough mountain not to become bored (or possibly even see it all). What it does provide in quantity other than area, is absolutely stunning views of the Alps, with Switzerland, Italy and Germany in sight. Phenominal! There are good facilities at the 3 bases and high up the mountain in several locations. The resorts are connected by a series of gondolas, but you can ski down the mountain to any base. Gondolas take you up the mountains too, avoiding long wind swept rides at the colder times of year. A varied nightlife in each town (each offering something a little different), something for everyone, and plenty of charming locally owned restaurants. Varied accomodation to meet all budgets and requirements. Resorts are on the hillside, so keep your hiking boots on. You might find things expensive, but what ski town isn't? But the size, quality and varied terrain outweight the negatives. Thumbs up - it stays on our list of "must come here again" places to ski.
3 Resorts, Gondolas, Lots of Mountain!!
3 Resorts, a bit expensive, can easily become separated
Very big and great area. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis are located quite high on the mountain and the lifts start direct from the villages. Through the lifts the villages are connected with each other. The area offers many possibilities for skiers. Most of the slopes are red ones but there are also many blue and black ones and additionally the area offers also options for freeriding. There is a very good and big park, perfect shaped with good obstacles. The skiing area is very family friendly not only because of some special slopes but also the lifts are very modern and very kids friendly. They even offer as an attraction a “ski-run” where you can fly over the skiing area but therefore you have to pay some extra money. Another plus is that most of the day it is sunny. The villages are pretty nice good to stay there. There are many bars and good restaurants. In the main season there can be many people and the ski passes are quite expensive.

Fiss, Serfas, and Ladis are three small Austrian towns that cling to the mountainside at about the 1400m level. I stayed in the town of Ried, and had about a 15 min drive up a winding road to the lifts. This is a very wide open area, mostly above treeline. Unlike some mountains where you only get a glimpse of the terrain from the base, at Fiss it's all spread out in front of you. It's a pretty intimidating hunk of mountain! The upper reaches of the mountain were not open the day I visited...not sure if that was due to high winds, avalanche hazard, of the lateness of the season. Still, the off-piste possibilities in the upper elevations seemed absolutely limitless...but it also looked like a place you could trigger an avalanche, so I'd pay attention to signs. I was able to get up to about the 2300m level, and it was great snow, even in late March. The area had good and modern lifts, except for some chairs that seemed painfully slow. There were several great on-mountain restaurants with breathtaking views, and I had a good lunch for 12 euro...not bad. . A lift ticket was 43.50 euro, with a 5 euro refund for returning pass. Not sure if that was an off-season rate, but it struck me as a good deal. I will definitely try to return here next year to explore some more off-piste!
Huge expanse of open terrain
A bit isolated
It is a phenomenal resort in the Tyrolean Alps. Take the train to the lift station from a large parking lot. It is a ski circus with Fiss and Ladis ( 2 other ski resorts) accessable by lifts and trails. Incredible scenery, great restaurants and bars on the mountain, lively night life. You can ski for several days and not ski the same run twice. The terrain stretches for miles. All levels of skiing ability feel welcome here. Great lifts and organization.
Many of us who do not live in "ski country" and cannot afford luxury travel get our ski thrills catch-as-catch-can. Here in San Antonio, one of my favorites is a skiing simulator at Fiesta Texas, a Six Flags theme park, where one can simulate downhill or slalom racing at novice, intermediate, and expert levels. To do all 63 gates at the expert level is a real thrill. But far more exciting to me is the excitement, joy. and serenity that comes with hearing (and singing) the skier's yodel from Serfaus, Austria. Texas has a large population of German transplants, and Alpine jodeling is a big part of that tradition. If you want some volksmusik skiing excitement in your life, Google search on Surfaus and Jodel (or yodel). You can almost feel the powder flying past your ears as you listen to "Serfaus Jodeler" from such groups as the Sauerkrauts, Kerry Christensen, and the Stratton Mountain Boys.Happy Trails.John Chase
