Easter 2008 was our second week of skiing for the year. It gave our Daughter and her Husband (BASI Instructor) a chance of a holiday which they couldnt afford as newly weds. As it was Easter flights were expensive and we opted for Air France from London with a change in Paris for a flight to Geneva - of course we were delayed and missed our connection but no matter we arrived at Geneva just before the Avis Desk closed. Do not believe what people say about not hiring on the French side - it is perfectly simple and much cheaper than hiring on the Swiss side of the Airport (Yes the border does run through the Airport) We had some doubts regarding our car of choice (I even went upto out local dealers to have a look)We hired a Fiat Sedici 4x4 and just managed to get 4 of us and our bags in and on top. The drive is quite short so discomfort is short lived. I took the precaution of buying the Swiss Motorway Pass online as there is a penalty if you get caught without one on a French Registered car. The cost was about £17. We rocked into Torgon some time after midnight very hungry and tired - fortunately there was a little Bar open with a Deli in one corner where we were able to buy cheese (local and very good) and a few other bits and pieces. We stayed in Les Cretes a huge Timeshare building built to mimic traditional Chalets - very 60s down to the orange fabric on the sofas but very spacious and well equipped. We woke up on Easter Sunday morning to snow falling. We met up with an old friend of my Daughter's from her Uni days together with his French Girlfriend and had bit of a whiteout type ski before eating out in the Hotel where the friends were staying. Monday it snowed all day and all night so not much skiing but from Tuesday on we had blue skies and powder. In Torgon you may opt for the local Lift Pass or one covering the Portes du Soleil area (vast). We did venture into the bigger area but found that there was plenty to keep us occupied locally and it was unbelievably quiet - the mountain Restaurants in Switzerland were less crowded than the French side and cheaper! Pointers regarding the Resort: 1. A car is essential (4x4 good and snow chains) The car allowed us to skip the lift nearest to our Apartment and to get down to Lake Geneva for a meal in the lovely Town of Montreux. 2. The Resort is a bit low and I would not normally book to go there apart from 'last minute' 3. Piste Maps and markings are not good. However this is not unique to Torgon - what a shame the man who designed the London Underground map didn't get an opportunity to produce Piste Maps. 4. There are a lot of drag lifts some of them pretty steep and jerky. My Daughter is a boarder and had to be coaxed to go on the lifts. 5. When the sun is out the views are stunning with Lake Geneva one way and Mont Blanc in the opposite direction. 6. The local Shop is perfectly adequate for self catering and the few Restaurants were not too expensive with a good Menu - once again a car is needed as the 'village' is spread out.
