If you're looking for a ski trip towards the end of the season, you can save money as Chalet specialist Ski Beat has announced a cut in the price of chalet holidays for March 2009, as well as many for February.

Price savings are £150 off for departures  21 February and 21 March, and £100 off  28 February and 7 and 14 March.

A typical holiday is reduced to £659 for departures on 7 March or £559 for departures on 21 March.

These are the prices for seven chalets in Plan Peisey, [R1305R, Les Arcs] - all within 300m of the newly re-opened Vanoise Express.

Prices are from £589 on for departures 28 February and £489 for departures on 21 March in la Plagne.

Prices are based on Gatwick to Chambery flights (Stansted, Bristol, and Manchester also available) and include transfers to resort and seven nights' accommodation with breakfast, afternoon tea, and dinner with wine (self-serve breakfast on seventh day).

The local Paradiski region claims to be the world's largest ski area by area (not by length of runs) with 34,000 hectares.  It was created for the 2003-4 season by lift-linking the ski areas of [R206R, La Plagne] and Les Arcs with a giant double-decker cable car (tram), The Vanoise Express.

The Vanoise Express actually lands in the resort of Peisey-Vallandry on the Les Arcs side.  The lift carries up to 200 people in its double decker cabins, takes four minutes to cross the valley, and travels up to 380 vertical metres above the valley floor.  There are no support towers between the two stations, primarily to minimize environmental impact.

Most of the local runs on the Les Arcs side are blues and reds, including the long cruiser Aigle from the top of L'Ours chair all the way back to resort.  Experts may have to go a little farther to keep them happy, but the legendary 7km (4.5) mile long black run from the top of the Aiguille Rouge down to Villaroger is worth the effort. One of the world's longest blacks, it covers the biggest vertical for a run of this grading, a full 2000 metres.  There are plenty of other challenges including mogul runs like the Dou d'Homme.
