Up to a metre of snow has already fallen in the Alps this week and more, much more, is on the way this weekend. Substantial snowfalls are forecast for the Alps and Pyrenees (up to 87cm) over the next 72hrs, with the heaviest snow expected on Saturday.


The week has got off to a good start in France with many resorts reporting light snowfalls, except for Chamonix which has received a bumper 60cm in the last three days! But the snow is only going to get heavier, with huge dumps forecast for many big-name resorts this weekend – the heaviest of which is forecast for Chamonix (a further 87cm to bring its weekly total to 147cm!). Snow forecast in the next 72hrs: 87cm forecast for Chamonix, 73cm for Les 2 Alpes, 72cm for Alpe d’Huez, 50cm for Morzine, 48cm for La Plagne, 43cm for Les Arcs and La Rosiere, 42cm for Megeve, 39cm in La Tania, 37cm for Val Thorens, 35cm for Meribel, 33cm for Val d’Isere and Tignes, 31cm for La Clusaz and 26cm for Serre Chevalier.


So far this week, Austrian resorts have not reported as much snow as France, with just a handful of resorts receiving anything. But things are set to get a whole lot snowier this weekend for many big-name Austrian ski resorts. Snow forecast in the next 72hrs: 43cm forecast for Molltaler Glacier, 26cm for Obergurgl-Hochgurgl, 22cm for Solden and Schladming, 20cm for Lech-Zuers, 19cm for Ischgl, 18cm for Mayrhofen and Stubai Glacier, 17cm for Zell am See and Saalbach, 14cm for Soll, 13cm for St. Anton, and 8cm for Kitzbuehel.


Italy has reported the heaviest snowfall in the Alps so far this week, with up to a metre of snow in the last 72hrs (100cm in Pescasseroli). This weekend, Italian resorts are forecast more substantial snowfalls. Snow forecast in the next 72hrs: 57cm for Livigno, 54cm for Madonna di Campiglio, 48cm for Arabba Marmolada, 40cm for Val Gardena, 37cm for Alagna Valsesia, 30cm for Cervinia-Breuil, 29cm for Champluc-Monterosa Ski, 25cm for Sestriere and Bardonecchia, 24cm for Sauze d’Oulx, 23cm for Courmayeur, and 18cm for Pila.


So far this week, Swiss ski resorts have received a similar amount of snow to Austria, with just a few resorts reporting light snowfall, up to 15cm. This weekend, many big-name Swiss ski resorts are forecast major snow dumps. Snow forecast in the next 72hrs: 46cm for Andermatt, 39cm for Saas-Fee, 33cm for Zermatt, 29cm for Champery, 28cm for Laax, 24cm for Davos Klosters, 20cm for Gstaad-Mountain Rides, 19cm for Villars-Gryon and Engelberg, 18cm for Verbier and Adelboden, and 17cm for Crans Montana and Grindelwald.


The Pyrenees hasn’t reported any new snow so far this week, but things are set to change this weekend.

ANDORRA – Snow forecast in the next 72hrs: 18cm forecast for Vallnord/Arcalis and Vallnord/Pal-Arinsal, and 17cm forecast for Grandvalira,

SPAIN – Snow forecast in the next 72hrs: 26cm forecast for Baqueira Beret, 24cm for Formigal, 11cm for La Molina, 9cm for Alto Campoo, and 6cm forecast for Sierra Nevada.

FRENCH PYRENEES – Snow forecast in the next 72hrs: 52cm forecast for Gavarnie/Cedre, 40cm for Piau Engaly, 33cm for Cauterets, 21cm for Ax-3-Domaines, 19cm for Peyragudes, 16cm for Val d’Azun, 14cm for St Lary Soulan, 7cm for Puyvalador, 4cm for Formigueres, 2cm for Les Angles, and 1cm for Font-Romeu/Pyrenees 2000.


No new snow has been reported in Bulgaria this week and none is forecast for the weekend. Pamporovo has the best snow conditions at present with 30cm at the bottom of the mountain and 70cm at the top. Other Bulgarian ski resorts include Borovets (40cm) and Bansko (20cm).


No new snow has been reported in Slovenia this week, but substantial dumps are forecast this weekend. Snow forecast in the next 72hrs: 80cm for Vogel, 65cm for Kranjska Gora, 40cm for Kravavec, and 19cm for Velika Planina – Kamnik.


No new snow has been reported in Slovakia since mid-Dec. and temperatures are very high, forcing many opened resorts to temporarily close. Unfortunately the New Year hasn’t brought any new snow and forecasters are expecting above-average temperatures for January too.

The Czech Republic has similar snow conditions as Slovakia, but temperatures are colder so resorts can at least use their snow guns. Forecasters are expecting average temperatures and snowfall for January.
