What makes a hotel or chalet family friendly? Follow our top tips on how to find the best family ski hotels and you’ll have a great ski holiday to remember!

A few tips first: Consider the size of your group. If your family is more von-Trapp and less 2.4 children, think about going for a half-board, full-board or an inclusive resort. Paying for meals, even if they are for children, will be a lot more expensive.

Consider the size of the room. Is it big enough for you and your brood? There’s no point trying to squeeze your family into smaller accommodation than you need. Fights between kids who just need a bit more space will not make for fond memories.  Interconnecting rooms are a good option as everyone is close enough but can easily retreat to their own space. Interconnecting rooms are normally very popular so book these early.

Consider your needs; that en-suite will probably make your stay much more pleasant. If you have teenage girls, consider getting them an en-suite too. Do check out the clubs and activities on offer for children and in particular consider the age-range that they cover.

Here are 10 of the best family ski hotels and chalets . . .

Chalet Janluke, Switzerland

Situated in La Tzoumaz on the side of a mountain overlooking the Rhone Valley, Chalet Janluke mixes traditional and modern architecture designed by award-winning architects to deliver a contemporary living space with an edge. Huge floor-to-ceiling windows offer stunning views of the surrounding peaks and fill the chalet with light.

There are four en-suite bedrooms; three are set up as super-kings or full size twins. The fourth is a children’s bedroom with two bunkbeds but this can be changed into two twins if preferred. Each bedroom has an en-suite bathroom with walk-in showers and there are televisions and Apple TVs in each room.

The family ski chalet has all of the amenities to cater to small children however we recommend this one for families with slightly older children as no doubt they’ll love the swish feel to the place. A spa room and terrace jacuzzi are also on-site.

Chalet Janluke can be rented on a self-catered, part catered or fully catered basis.

There are three bedrooms, two family suites and a separate twin bedroom on the first floor while on the second floor there is an open play living area with lounge and balcony, kitchen and dining area.

A family suite sleeps 2 adults and 2 children in a two room suite comprised of one double bedroom and a connected room with bunkbeds. The suite has a private family shower room.

A selection of childcare services, including ski school and lunch, is available 6 days a week for little groms from 0-12 years between 08:30-16:30, at an added cost.

Hotel Arlberghaus, Zürs, Austria

Family owned, family run and modern, the 4-star Hotel Arlberghaus is a wonderful spot to take your brood. We especially rate the high level of service provided; staff are professional and friendly.

The restaurant serves superb food and there are many wonderful Austrian wines to choose from. The hotel is located next to the Ski School and the Ski Kindergarten.  We particularly like the “Little Zurs” ski club where children can learn to slide on snow in a playful environment. The days are filled with a variety of activities, not just skiing, to allow for children to get used to the snow. Every Friday there’s a mini-ski race where children can put their skills to the test!

Chalet Hotel Aiguille Percée, Tignes

Centrally located in the heart of Tignes Le Lac, this welcoming chalet hotel has undergone an extensive revamp. This family ski hotel, which can sleep up to seven in its Superior Apartments, has 13 new bedrooms including interconnecting and family suites.  All of the original guest bedrooms have been upgraded and most of these have been fitted with new bathrooms.   For those so inclined there’s also a new health & beauty treatment room, a steam room and sauna.

The restaurant is particularly good and on offer is a full English or continental breakfast.  High-tea is served at 4pm when there is an abundance of home-made cakes, soups, juices and teas to choose from. Evening dinner consists of three courses with wine and a children's high tea is available all week for children aged 12 years and under.

The local bars are within walking distance; alternatively, you can get the bus to Val Claret.

Chalet Hotel Christina, La Plagne, France

Excellently located, welcoming, and with top-notch childcare facilities, Chalet Christina is a perfect home away from home for families. You can spy the slopes from the restaurant, the lifts are opposite the chalet and the ski school is less than 200m away.

Bedrooms are comfortable and staff are happy to rearrange them to suit your needs. Some have interconnecting rooms so be sure to enquire about these. The nanny service is highly rated and there is an evening club for children where they can make friends while parents recover!

Hotel Hammerhof, Filzmoos, Austria

One thing that’s always appreciated when arriving at your temporary home, after a stressful journey, is a welcome drink and that’s exactly what the charming Ebner family serve to make you feel more at ease.

The family ski hotel is a smoke-free zone and the produce is all fresh, organic and home-grown – in fact the Ebner family run their own farm onsite!

As a resort, Filzmoos is an ideal location for families with children of mixed ages as it has childcare facilities for little ones and fun family-friendly bars – think ‘PG’ and not club 18-30.  For added excitement, the Ebner family offer free horse-drawn sleigh rides to guests.

Chalet Violetta, Canazei, Italy

Baby-friendly Chalet Violetta has put children at the top if its agenda. It has everything onsite that you could need for small children including a Pepi Penguin nursery.  The nursery, which is managed by Crystal holidays, is staffed by UK qualified staff all of whom are CRB checked and first-aid trained. The nursery has a huge range of games and toys and has a quiet area for sleepy children.  There is also a kids’ club for children aged between 3-11.

Chalet 25, Pamparoo Village, Bulgaria

Purpose-built Pamporovo in Southern Bulgaria is the go-to resort for families with young children. It’s sunny, there aren’t many steep runs nor is there a wild apres-ski atmosphere. That’s not to say that there isn’t a great vibe about the resort; indeed for those that fancy a few drinks post-ski, there are a number of lively pubs that are good fun.

At Pamparovo village, you’ll find a picture-perfect village of 38 sweet chalets. Our favourite,  Chalet 25, has a traditional open plan living room with separate dining area, fully equipped kitchen, and a wood burning fireplace. It also comes equipped with cable television, a DVD player and a selection of family-friendly DVDs.  And if that wasn’t enough, there’s a Playstation and a ton of games too.

An on-site restaurant and bar are located across the road from the chalets.  For a special outing, hunting wild-boar excursions can be arranged.

Chalet Hotel Berangere, Les Deux Alpes, France

Sitting at the foot of the slopes is Chalet Hotel Berangere. This family ski hotel has a gorgeous sunny terrace and many of the rooms have balconied windows where you can soak up the sun’s rays while taking in the views. We rate the hotel’s convenient set-up: it’s ski-in-ski-out and the rental shop is close by.

Childcare is where it excels; staff are terrific and there is an abundance of activities for children.  On the downside the hotel could do with a refurbishment and we don’t rate the single rooms.  However, this is one of the cheaper Mark Warner hotels and it’s a good choice if you’re not bothered by a lack of frills.

Hotel Bruxelles, Soldeu, Andorra

Compact and centrally located at just 200m from the gondola, Hotel Bruxelles is one of Neilson’s favourite family-friendly hotels. Children aged four and under will be looked after at the hotel’s crèche – there’s no need to pre-book as there aren’t normally issues with availability but do check this before you set off.

The restaurant on the terrace overlooking the slopes is a popular spot for lunch. The hotel staff are friendly and helpful and the bar serves a great sangria.

Neilson offer good discounts for family skiing – up to 30% off. On the downside, the hotel is small and noise can travel through rooms.  Ask for a quiet room if you’re travelling with small children and avoid the front, road facing rooms.
