With shorter days and longer nights fast approaching, the cure for any summertime sadness is The Telegraph’s Ski and Snowboard Festival. Back at Battersea Evolution, the UK’s best loved winter sport event runs from Thursday 24th to 27 October, 2019. Packed with big air, big names and a big vintage Ferris wheel, it’s time to put away the flip flops and get reacquainted with your woolliest jumper.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes

The ‘world’s greatest living explorer’ and legendary pioneer, Sir Ranulph Fiennes is this year’s glittering jewel in the crown of festival events. Not only was he the first person to reach both poles as well as cross the Antarctic AND Arctic Oceans, 2019 marks 10 years since he became the oldest Briton to summit Mount Everest. Head to The Inghams Lodge on Friday 25th of October to hear Sir Ranulph speak at 1pm about his life achievements and recount a travel story or two. Be quick though, this is a first-come-first-serve talk. (And yes he’s third cousin to actors Ralph and Joseph).

Mount Battersea

Always a spectacular crowd-pleaser, ‘Mount Battersea’ is where you want to be to catch some of the UK’s best ski and snowboard athletes put on a show across all four days. The 50ft kicker is covered in real snow from The Snow Centre Hemel Hempstead and will see competitions, demos and interviews from the yet-to-be published line-up.

This year in a festival first, kids aged 4-10 years old can get involved with a Ski Taster Experience at the bottom of the ramp where they’ll be guided over baby slopes. ‘Mount Battersea’ is also a good meeting point if you get lost from your group!

Radical Gains: The GB Park & Pipe Story

If you’re not fizzing with excitement already, then hold onto your beanie hats because free sports national treasure Billy Morgan will be on the ‘Radical Gains: The GB Park & Pipe Story’ panel at 1pm in The Inghams Lodge on Saturday 26th October. He’s joined by fellow athletes Peter Speight and Rowan Coultas in a discussion hosted by Graystone Action Sports Academy about the extraordinary rise of British freestyle skiing and snowboarding.

Après scene

Warm-up with a drink and practice those rusty dance moves at the Thursday and Friday Après nights from 5pm. With acts being announced soon, the festival after-dark promises live music, DJ sets and entertaining performances on ‘Mount Battersea’. Consider it an après-apéritif for the snow season ahead.

And plenty more

On top of the above highlights, every day throughout the Ski and Snowboard Festival there will be ice-skating and curling, dog-sledding, a possibility to shop for new kit, skate and parkour demonstrations, tasty street-food stalls, famous faces from the world of action sports, the opportunity to speak to winter experts representing favourite resorts and the chance to discover new ones; plus anything else you could possibly want to make the most out of Winter 19/20.
