Resorts in the Mid Atlantic finally caught a break in the form of sustained cold weather, and are taking advantage of the drop in temps to make snow. Some natural snow also fell in last weekend's storm, putting skiers and riders in the mood for winter.

North Carolina led the way in the Mid Atlantic when [R434R, Sugar Mountain] and [R103R, Cataloochee] opened Thanksgiving weekend on machine snow. Cataloochee closed again when the weather warmed. They were joined by [R18R, Appalachian Ski Mtn.] where three trails opened on Dec. 6 and expanded to seven the next day. West Virginia's [R801R, Canaan Valley] will open Saturday, Dec. 12 for its 38th anniversary with four trails and a base of 12 to 48 inches. Pennsylvania resorts are following suit with [R44R, Big Boulder] taking first-to-open honors on Dec. 6. This is a big weekend for the state. Lift tickets are discounted $10 on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 12-13,  for anyone who brings a Toys for Tots donation.
