Skied for two days, March 16 and 17. Upper slopes okay, lower slushyish and not great. Unless it gets cold soon, hard to imagine how will be able to produce decent skiing at 10 degrees at the top of the mountain. Nightlight okay with lots of bars and 80s music cranked.
wide slopes
weather is warm
We have now visited Schladming several times in the summer and winter. Our experience has been excellent every time! Winter - the snow and lift systems are excellent , with improvements being made all the time - especially over the last year and the next few years because they will be hosting the 2013 World Cup - winning the bid last year. Every January, they host the Mens Nightrace which is televised and has a superb atmosphere. There is such a warm welcome in this town from the local people, and the mountain restaurants are excellent - with over 46 across the huge skiing area and many more in the village. All provide a variety of food and cater for all tastes. Fantastic snow last season and wide variety of skiing over the whole Amade ski area - linking the 4 mountains Lively Apres ski in the Tenne at the bottom of the main Planai lift and also apres ski at the top when the lifts stay open to transport skiers back to the village. We loved the wide range of activities, tobbogganning - excellent , really long run and a great indoor/ outdoor pool in the village with saunas etc to soothe the limbs after skiing! We were staying in the Planai 200 apartment advertised on the Schladming/dachstein tourist wesite and loved it because it was so accessible to everything, skiing, restaurants and pool. Location location! We also went in summer and couldn't believe the number of summer activities. Walks of course - Wlde Wasser, wonderful waterfall walks, glacier skiing, ice palace tour, rope activities at the top of the planai , great outdoor pool, canoeing, rafting, horse riding and of course their wonderful cycle paths - so totally safe ! Also really close to the lakes in the area - Hallstatt was really beautiful to visit, ice caves and only 50 minutes into Salzburg. Really love it here and can't wait to return!!
Excellent snow and pistes along with the mountain restaurants, cafes and ambience

Schladming and its adjoining mountains are all mainly north facing so hold the snow unbelievably well throughout the season. The only down side is they can get a little hard-work near the end of the day so make sure you have good edges! If things get a little too busy on the main Planai mountain, head over to the beautiful Haus area, fantastic runs and some wonderful mountain huts (stop at the Marcus Hut and try a 'Strammer' ). The traditional atmosphere is helped a good deal by the constant playing of old fashioned Austrian 'oom pah pah' music in most establishments. On arriving back in Schladming (the black run home is fantastic), head to the Hanglbar for some apres ski, the Austrians and Dutch are experts in dancing in their ski boots and will make you feel very welcome. Bar games, such as hammering in a nail with an ice-pick are also abundant - usually played for forfeits such as downing large amounts of jagermeister. Make sure you make it home for dinner though or you'll miss the next mornings skiing!
Long runs and excellent snow
gets icey at end of day
stayed at the Ferienalm Hotel, huge room and not too bad food. the staff were terrific and loved to chat The walk to town was a long one but i left skis and boots at the Planai lifts so was great Runs were realy fantastic and very quiet i skied all of the 4 mountains and they were all great. town was nice with some great cake shops too. I will definatly go back here but to a closer hotel to the lifts.
4 great mountains
long walk to hotel
Schladming was a wonderful skiing experience in every way. This not so well know resort in the Eastern Alps is much larger than it appears. Each mountain is a nice size in itself but add the four link mountains together and you have a week of exploring to do. The ski runs are extremely well groomed. Restaurants are everywhere. A great excursion is to rodel at night at Hoch Wurchen. A wonderful rodel piste with a small restaurant at the top by the name of Hoch Wurchen Alm. The glacier at the Dachstein is definetly worth the trip. You do not need a car because there is a bus system to get you around, but things are a bit spread apart so a car is useful. All in all a ski area well worth the effort.
My family and I have been to Schladming several times to ski and we always stay at the great resort Sporthotel Royer, which offers a week long all-inclusive package. The resort has a great indoor pool the kids enjoy after hours. We're planning on going back soon. During the week, The kids go the ski school, while we become very adventurous together. We've used the hospital, which I highly recommend when necessary. They also have all sorts of shops and restraunts that are useful.
My family and friends have been coming to Schladming for 15 years and have seen constant improvements in the area over this time. What this resort really excels in is its Piste management, across the 4 mountans they have the largesst quantity of snow cannons in Austria, even the piste bashers have got a brand new snow depth radar system that allows them to concentrate on the problem areas of snow and keep the pistes in mint condition. They are the first resort in Austria to have this system. One area that the town was lacking in was a lively apres ski scene, this has been remedied this year with the opening of the HOHEN TENNEHAUS, which is a new 3 floor 1000 seater apres ski bar/restaurant and nightclub that opens until 4:00am, at the base station of the Planai gondola in the town. They host regular live music nights and other events. Add in the season opening party, which included a concert by the artist PINK and the world cup Nightrace in late January which draws a crowd of 40,000 plus, this by no means a quiet town. There are about 12 other bars around the town and numerous quality restaurants. The Salzburger Ski Armade pass covers not only the 4 local mountains totalling 165kms but a vast area of up to 850km's throughout the Salzburgerland. My tip is to fly to Salzburg and get a hire car (ranges from £130 per week for an economy size car)and take full advantage of the mountains on offer, most of which are within a 1/2 hour drive of Schladming. Wednesday evening the Planai gondola runs until 7:30pm, as most of the Planai mountaintop huts host apres ski parties on this day of the week. Also great fun is the floodlit 5km toboggan run on Hochwurzen,(20 euros for the bus from town and back, which runs until 12:30am, plus the gondola to the top of Hochwurzen and toboggan hire). Finish off with a few drinks and a boogie in the TAUERNALM at the end of the toboggan run for an excellant night out. The resort is becoming more and more popular with Brits, as they discover it, but it is still a firm favourite with the Austrians, Germans and a growing number of Dutch. There is also an excellent swimming pool with outside heated pool in winter, as well as good winter walks on cleared paths. For those into cross country skiing the world cup resort of Ramsau sits on a high sunny plateau about 4 miles outside Schladming. The resort also has its own Glacier sking on the DACHSTEIN glacier which includes a high altitude guided glacial ski route of 20km's or so, to Obertauern, with transport back to Schladming. Definitely a world class resort, that has won several awards over the years. In fact we think it is so good that I am buying a property there, so we can enjoy it even more. PS. It is also a top place to visit in the summer, and only one hour from Salzburg by car or train.
Overall the experience i had in schladming was unforgetable, and for the all right reasons. I went as part of a group of 8 people in january 2007, our ages varied from 9 to 50 and we all equally enjoyed the experience as it catered for all of our differnt needs. Although this was a bad season, there wasn't a problem with the skiing and the snow cannons were very helpful in ensuring that the slopes were well maintained and managed when you woke up the next day. there is plenty of apres ski activrities in schladming which were fun for our group to participate in such as the tiroleon bowling and the toboganning. all the restaurants we awte in were warm and invitnig with great food and further more they were reasonably priced as well. all of our party had a wonderful time and i would defibnatly go back again as there is plenty of great skiing and lots dof fun!
I have skied in this resort since I could stand up, my family have taken loads of other familys skiing here, i can gladly say that the skiing bug has biten evryone of those familys very hard, and we get numerous offers to take them back evry year! Great for kids, adults, pro's, begineers. Beautiful town even better mountains! Hope to see you all there this year! Greg
it was pretty cool....very quiet hardly any one there so we had whole runs to ourselves....so much choice of runs with 4 good mountains and a glacier...the village is low key but with several restaurants and shops. one os the best resorts i've visited. i do recommend you rent a car so you can get around easily
