Nassfeld Hermagor ski resort lies in the Carnic Alps on the border with Italy and, with 110 km of pistes, is Carinthia's largest ski area (a top-10 in Austria). Sonnenalpe Nassfeld, at around 1,550 m, forms the centre, while the area extends up to 2,002 m at its highest point. Thanks to its south-facing aspect, the resort gets around 100 more hours of sunshine than areas north of the Alps - while the Adriatic weather influence brings heavy snowfall: Nassfeld is a genuine "snow pocket," often seeing several metres of fresh snow in a short space of time. The pistes are correspondingly snow-sure, with 460 snow cannons providing 100% technical snowmaking down to the valley when required. Current snow conditions: heavy snowfall has kept the main pistes in excellent condition this winter season (as of winter 2025). Winter sports enthusiasts will find varied, wide pistes at every level in Nassfeld - approximately 30 km blue, 69 km red and 11 km black. Around 28 modern lifts (including the 3-stage Millennium-Express gondola) open up the extensive terrain across four mountain ridges. The longest piste, "Carnia," runs 7.6 km down into the valley to Tröpolach and is partly floodlit for night skiing (one of the longest illuminated pistes in the Alps). Snowparks, timed race courses and plenty of "Nice Surprises" add further variety - from photo points and speed checks to relaxed panoramic lounges right on the piste. Dining is well catered for too, with 25 rustic mountain huts and restaurants serving Carinthian home cooking alongside Italian specialities - genuine Italian ristorantes serving pizza and pasta are just one piste away. Family-friendliness is taken very seriously at Nassfeld. The resort has several secured children's areas and practice slopes, and on "The Wave" and "The Snake" - adventure runs with waves, banked turns and a tunnel - both children and parents have great fun. Professional ski schools right on the piste offer lessons for children and even childcare at the mini-club. Particularly family-friendly offers include: in the low season, children up to 9.9 years old often receive a free lift pass and accommodation, and hire equipment for children is sometimes free or just €1 per day. Parents can relax and enjoy the sunny panoramic pistes while the little ones are well looked after - and everyone meets back up for a well-earned stop to round off the ski day with Carinthian Kasnudeln or Italian pizza.
