Interlaken Area Ski Resorts FAQ

Interlaken Region: Gateway To the Jungfrau -

Wengen. Mürren. Grindelwald. Lauterbrunnen. Interlaken. They're all here at the gateway to the Jungrau Region of Switzerland.

Everyone has their own favorite. Wengen aficionados will say their destination is free of automobiles, prettier, more relaxing, and quieter at night. They have the same slopes to ski on as the other villages and the usual amenities of any place worthy of being called a major winter sports resort. Wengen lays claim to all the terrain in the region and all the uphill conveyances.

Interlaken, 10 miles away between two stunning alpine lakes, claims the very same 212 km of prepared slopes, 42 lifts, and nearly a 1.6 km vertical.

Wengen skiers get on a cable car and head up to Männlichen and its cruising terrain, which flows down to Grund and Grindelwald. Or, board a train up to the Kleine Scheidegg rail junction and take even longer runs down toward Grindelwald.

Use the station as the jumping off spot to access the famed Lauberhorn World Cup downhill course. It is mostly a red run back down to Wengen, unless you try to ski it at World Cup speeds.

Most skiers who stay in Wengen will cross over to the massive First area above Grindelwald and opposite the Eiger. Tougher skiing and riding above Mürren includes a run from the Schilthorn, a revolving restaurant that you may have seen in the James Bond movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. It was the villain’s headquarters.

There is plenty of lodging, including many economical ski apartments. That's why you'll find numerous U.S. tour operators choosing this region.

Gateway airport is Zürich (175 km). Drive by way of Bern and Thun. Train travel is Zürich-Olten-Bern-Interlaken. Interlaken serves Grindelwald via a ski bus.
