Skiing in February half term
La Rosiere, France
Family favourite, La Rosiere sits on the Italian border where you can ski over to to La Thuile in Italy for a slice of authentic pizza. The combined ski area is called l’Espace San Bernardo and offers 152km of runs. La Rosiere is known for its sunny slopes and reliable snow record. In fact it has some of the highest snowfall in France with an average of 7.5 metres of powder. The majority of slopes are blues and reds, so perhaps best suited to intermediates. But it also appeals to advanced skiers thanks to its challenging freeride terrain on Mont Valaisan. The resort is largely car-free and features a good selection of cafes, bars, restaurants and shops. Non-skiing activities include ice skating, a luge run, bowling alley and thermal baths in La Thuile.
Flaine, France
Snowsure Flaine is part of the huge Grand Massif ski area, which combines traditional villages such as Samoens. This car-free family friendly resort sits at 1600m and offers plenty of ski-in/ski-out accommodation. It offers 140km of local slopes as well as 265km of Grand Massif slopes. The north-facing slopes maintain the snow well. The ski area is well suited to all skiers. The varied terrain offers everything from tree-lined blue runs to deep off-piste powder.
Sestriere, Italy
Sestriere may not be the prettiest resort but it is affordable and conveniently located close to Turin Airport It is best suited to beginners and intermediate skiers. It also has some steep challenges. Sestriere is part of the 400km Milky Way with its interconnected pistes.
Warth-Schroecken, Austria
Snow, snow, snow! Warth Schroecken has some of the snowiest slopes in Austria and Europe with around 11 metres each winter. The pretty village is small with just a few hotels but some big scenery. Set in the Ski Arlberg region, it offers access to the lift-linked ski area of Lech, Zuers and St. Anton. Warth’s local slopes make up 63km of runs, race tracks and funslopes and numerous ski-in/ski-out accommodation options.
Ellmau, Austria
Family friendly resort of Ellmau makes up the northern edge of the huge Ski Welt. The combined 284km of pistes are best suited to intermediates, but there’s also some good off-piste in the trees. The traditional village has a nice selection of gentle beginner runs. The ski area is located below 2000m but Ellmau’s powerful snowmaking system ensures good coverage throughout the season.
Madonna di Campilgio, Italy
Set in the stunning Dolomites, Madonna di Campiglio offers 150km of well-groomed pistes. The resort is ideal for intermediates with plenty of tree-lined intermediate runs and a great snowmaking system. It also offers gentle beginner areas as well as steeps for more advanced. The bustling resort has a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants.
