Find your local dry ski slope and book some ski and snowboard lessons for the family. Or, if you’re a competent skier, just go for an open session to get your ski legs warmed up before your holiday.
But, what is a dry ski slope? It’s an artificial ski slope that mimics real snow. Dry slopes enable all of us to ski or ride all year round in a much more convenient location, closer to home. Lift tickets are a bit cheaper than ski resorts, too, depending how long you want to play (most based on two hours sessions). They vary widely, so check before you go. Ski equipment and clothing can also be included in the price of packages.

Here’s a fun fact: The longest dry ski slope in the world is in Russia’s Caucasus region. the Verduci slope is 1.13km in length using Nevelast technology (a ski mat with breathing holes).
Dry ski slopes across the UK
We’ve compiled a list of dry ski slopes across the UK: SOUTH, MIDLANDS, NORTH, SCOTLAND and NORTHERN IRELAND.
The South’s dry ski slopes
Chatham Snowsports Centre, Kent
The 200-metre-long main dry ski slope is accessed via a button tow and accompanied by a 30-metre nursery slope.
It is located 45 minutes from London and has the longest artificial slope in the South East.
The centre is open throughout the year and offers skiers and snowboarders of all levels the facilities to learn new skills.
Open practice is available for experienced skiers and snowboarders. There is an active ski and snowboard club at the centre as well as a range of private lessons and courses to chose from. Youngsters aged 4 to 7 can be enrolled in the tots’ lessons with small group sizes. Themed evening events include freestyle nights and families nights.
Tobogganing and snowtubing are also available: the 700-metre tree-lined winding tobogganing track is the longest in the UK (children aged 4 to 7 must ride with an adult) and the snowtubing takes place on an 80-metre track (suitable for ages 4 and above).

Norfolk Snowsports, Norfolk
Two dendex dry ski slopes are served by two tow lifts: the main slope stretches 170 metres and features a wave and mogul field; the nursery slope is 40 metres long.
Open practice sessions are available for members to develop their skills. The club has a range of ski equipment for all ages too.
The club is open all year round and provides an extensive range of lessons for all disciplines and ability levels. Ski and snowboard lessons are available from initial taster sessions to advanced levels. Freestyle and racing sessions take place every week.
Snowtubing is also available at the centre for everyone over 6 years of age. One hour’s snowtubing costs £17pp.

Suffolk Ski Centre, Suffolk
Two floodlit dry ski slopes: the main slope is 180 metres, incorporates a red and blue run and is served by two drag lifts; the junior slope is 40 metres and used for beginners’ lessons.
There are a variety of lessons on offer: school courses, Saturday workshops, race training, private lessons, kindergarten workshop, a ramp night (for freestylers), and many more.
Plastic toboggans are also available and are used on a safe carpeted slope away from the ski slopes, close to the ski lodge. It costs £5.50 for children; £6.50 for adults.
Ringos (snowtubing) takes place on half of the main slope and costs £6 children; £8 adults. There is a minimum age restriction of 8 years. Booking is necessary.

Alpine Snow Sports Southampton, Hampshire
There are three nylon bristle dry ski slopes measuring 110 metres, 90 metres, and 30 metres in length, served by two Poma draglifts.
Recreational skiing and snowboarding are available as long as you have good control, can turn, stop, and use lifts. There is also a range of ski/snowboard taster days, courses, and training for all levels.
Ringo sessions take place on the 90-metre slope. Ringos are large inflatable rings (similar to snowtubing, but on a dry slope) and are particularly popular with youngsters aged 6 and above. Children of all ages are well catered for with summer camps and races.
The latest skiing, snowboarding, and snowblading equipment is available for hire and included in the cost of the lessons.

Calshot Activities, Hampshire
Calshot is one of the largest outdoor adventure centres in Britain. The three dry ski slopes are covered in snowflex, a new surface with no holes, for easy skiing and are served by lifts. Calshot’s main slope is 143 metres long and there are two beginners’ slopes.
Group courses, private lessons, and recreational skiing are available to all levels of skier and snowboarder. There are also family ski courses, freestyle skiing courses, and evening events.
The ski slopes are available for recreational skiing and snowboarding every Wednesday. More extensive ski slope opening times are available from September to March.
Other activities . . . A fully licensed bar at the bottom of the slopes. Non-skiing activities include sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, powerboating, rock climbing, and track cycling.
Alpine Snowsports Aldershot, Hampshire
The centre offers a number of different snowsports activities for all ages. There are three dry ski slopes, the main slope is 110 metres and the two nursery slopes are both 75 metres long. All are fully floodlit and have their own mist system. Skiers access the slope via a ski tow. Sledging and donut sessions are also available.
There are a number of private and group lessons available for all ages. Freeride sessions run every Tuesday evening complete with music, ramps, and rails. To attend a practice session without a lesson you’ll need to be able to control your speed, turn, and use the ski lift.
Other amenities . . . There’s a fully licensed bar and a ski shop stocking a range of adult and child clothing and accessories. Free parking outside.
Knockhatch Ski & Board, East Sussex
Knockhatch Adventure Park is surrounded by 80 acres of countryside. One of the attractions on offer is the dry ski centre.
The main dry ski slope measures 110 metres and is accessed via a draglift. Two nursery slopes are accessed by a separate draglift. Knockhatch’s dry ‘powder pack slope surface is lubricated with a mist for better performance.
First-timers can learn on a separate slope before progressing to the nursery slope. Snowboarders and advanced skiers can practice tricks on the ridge and jumps.
There are a range of lessons on offer: the ski tester sessions offer an easy introduction to the gear and slopes for £20; the beginner course is three 90-minute sessions for £66; private lessons cost £42.50 per person; family lessons are £100 for a family of four; penguin lessons are 30-minute one-to-one instruction for youngsters aged 5-8; and school and youth groups can also be arranged.
Other amenities . . . Clubhouse serving hot and cold snacks and a ski shop stocking the latest gear. Knockhatch Adventure Park features rides, attractions, and events for families.
Guildford Ski Slope Surrey
The centre features three dry ski slopes: a 50-metre-long main slope; a 20-metre nursery slope; and a 40-metre slope for donutting (snowtubing).
Open Practice is available and both private and group lessons are held for all levels of skier and snowboarder.
There are two ways to enjoy donutting: a public session with up to 15 people using the slope at fixed times or a group session for 10-15 people where you get exclusive use of the slope. Group sessions are available seven days a week.

Sandown Sports Club, Surrey
The main dry ski slope, with its own button lift, is 120 metres long with a left-hand bend. Its four nursery slopes range from 10 to 80 metres long.
There are private lessons, courses, and learn-to-ski days for all levels of skiers and snowboarders. Open practice is only for experienced skiers and snowboarders, those under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Ringos, a type of snowtubing, are a popular choice with children aged 6 to 14. Youngsters can also enjoy the foam-filled sledges for ages 6-11.
Other amenities . . . Other amenities include ringos, sledging, two picnic areas, and a clubhouse/bar with a children’s menu.
Folkstone Sports Centre, Kent
This year-round dry ski centre offers skiing, snowboarding, and tobogganing for ages 5 and above. The main slope has separate beginners’ areas towards the bottom and is accessed via a button lift.
Open practice is available for skiers/boarders of a certain level (you must be able to stop and turn). Ski school is open to both adults and juniors over 11 years. Younger children (aged 5+) can benefit from Saturday classes.
Toboganning and Swiss bobsleighs are also featured and particularly popular with families. All activities must be pre-booked.
Other amenities . . . Two swimming pools, a skatepark, sports centre, gym, spa facilities, and a nine-hole golf course.
Bromley Ski Centre, Kent
This year-round centre has a 120-metre-long main slope served by two lifts and is complete with a mogul run to test the most accomplished skier. Beginners will find a nursery slope with a gentle gradient and taster sessions to get to grips with the basics.
Ramps and rails are erected Tuesday evenings for freeskiers and snowboarders. There’s also a quarter-pipe.
Private and group lessons are available for most ages and all levels. There are also themed weeks: family weeks, improvers’ weeks, and ski safari.

Bowles Outdoor, Kent
Bowles has two dry ski slopes: a 45-metre nursery slope made of soft Snowflex and a 76-metre main slope made of dendix for more advanced learners.
Both slopes are floodlit, allowing sessions to run into the evening. They also have variable speed button tow lifts and water spray systems for smooth skiing whatever the weather.
The dry ski slope also hosts events for the Bowles Ski Racing Club and the Kent, the Sussex Ski Club, and Disability Snowsport UK.
Open slope sessions take place between October and end of April each year (see Web site for times). A range of courses, lessons (private and group), and clubs are available including a kids’ club and race club. Equipment hire is included in the cost of courses, lessons, and open slope sessions.
Other amenities . . . A heated indoor pool with a moving water jet to simulate white water canoeing, three rope climbing courses, and a huge range of problem-solving and team-building activities. There’s also a games room, shop, cabin selling drinks, dining hall, and onsite lodge accommodation.
Brentwood Ski Centre, Essex
Overlooking more than 52 acres of scenic woodland, the Brentwood Ski Centre is well suited to all levels, from beginners to racers.
There are four slopes, all with a SkiTech surface: main slope is 180 metres long and accessed via a button tow; the short main is 120 metres with a button tow; and the two nursery slopes used for teaching, both 40 metres long, accessed via a rope tow. There’s also a snowboard park for freestylers. Find the latest snow clothing and equipment are available at the centre.
A range of courses are available, including adult group courses, a children’s morning, private tuition, school and youth group courses, and a ladies’ morning.

Gosling Ski and Snowboard Centre, Hertfordshire
There are two dry ski slopes: a 160-metre main slope and a 70-metre nursery one. Gosling offers lessons for all abilities as well as open recreational ski sessions. To take part in the latter, you must be able to control your speed and direction and must also be confident using a drag lift. Kindergarten sessions and a junior ski club run on Saturday mornings.
Other amenities . . . Gym, two fitness studios, tennis centre (indoor and outdoor courts), spa, pool, golf driving range, indoor sports centre with children’s play, velodrome stadium, trampoline park and an athletics track.
Snowtrax, Dorset
The main slope is 110 meters long with a three-metre kicker at the lower end of the run. A 30-metre intermediate slope running parallel to the main slope and two nursery slopes lower down. All the slopes are surfaced in Proslope matting. Both private and group lessons are available for all ski levels.
Snowtrax also hosts Air Attack freestyle competitions, annual pond skim, and the South Coast Ski & Snowboard Show.
Other amenities . . . Snowtrax also offers skibobs and ringos for the younger kids, plus an alpine adventure park with its own pirate ship. On-site there is a bar and restaurant, equipment tuning and repair workshop, and a large ski and snowboard shop with specialist boot fitting equipment and a good range of ski kits.
The Midland’s dry ski slopes
Stoke Ski Centre, Stoke on Trent
There are two dry ski slopes with dendix: the main slope is 160 metres long with 50 metres of moguls and there is also a nursery slope.
Open practice is available to all those who can control speed and direction and use the lifts without assistance.
There is also a range of lessons for all ages and skiing abilities, including juniors, adult beginners, adult intermediates, adult advanced, as well as private lessons.
Other amenities . . . The snowsports shop rents ski/board equipment for all ages and also offers ski servicing. Catered party packages are available for kids/groups.
Tallington Ski & Snowboard Centre, Tallington
Tallington Lakes is a large complex with a wide choice of land and water activities. There are two floodlit dry ski slopes: the 120-metre main slope and a beginner’s slope. The slope surface is kept lubricated with a mist system.
Slope users must be able to control speed, direction, and use the lift if not taking ski lessons. Open practice is available at all times, but it’s advisable to phone to check availability.
A range of private and group lessons are available; a course of four one-hour sessions is advisable for beginners. Children have access to the kids’ ski club and toboggan parties.
The Lakeside Bar & Restaurant is a large family-friendly eatery with a well-stocked cellar. And the pro shop stocks an extensive range of ski/snowboarding equipment and clothing to suit all sizes.

Telford Ski & Snowboard, Telford
The centre is located next to the Madeley Court Sports Centre on the outskirts of Madeley. There are two dry ski slopes: an 85-metre main slope with draglift and a nursery slope. Open practice is available for all those who can turn, stop, and use the lift.
A range of lessons are available: “Tinies” is for children aged 3-5; “White Tigers” is a fun coaching session for ages 6-15; the adult ski school is suitable for beginners to advanced; daytime ski schools are for the over 50s; snowboard lessons for ages 8+; and family lessons and race training.
The ski lodge offers a range of equipment hire for all ages.
Other amenities . . . Madeley Court Sports Centre features a swimming pool, indoor sports hall, fitness suite, synthetic turf pitch, solarium, bar, and social hall.
Ski Kidsgrove, Stoke on Trent
The dry ski slope is set within the mature grounds of Bathpool Park. It stretches 85 metres long and is served by a button lift. The slope is fully floodlit and operates in all weathers.
Recreational skiing is only available to club members (day membership is available). No membership is required for ski lessons; ski instructors are qualified and registered with Snowsport England.
For beginners, there is a programme of three 1.5-hour lessons over a three-week period and one-hour intermediate lessons to improve skiing technique. Private and group bookings can be arranged to suit individual circumstances.
Other amenities . . . There is a ski lodge with tea shop. The club also organises social events such as bike rides, club walks, camping weekends, and club holidays.
Ackers Adventure, Birmingham
The centre has three floodlit synthetic bristle matting slopes available for use throughout the year. Its main dry ski slope is approximately 100 metres long and incorporates a ramp jump area and accessed by a button ski lift. There are also two 30-metre nursey slopes, one for snowboard lessons and the other for starter ski lessons.
Skiing/Snowboarding lessons and courses are offered all year round for all levels. Recreational skiing is available to experienced skiers who can link turns, stop, and use lifts.
There is also a 25-metre toboggan slope available for anyone under 12 years and costs £3 per half hour.
Other amenities . . . Climbing, canoeing, archery, first aid courses, the Jungle Challenge, and activity days.
Runcorn Snowsports Centre, Cheshire
The Runcorn Ski Centre is situated in 800 acres of landscaped park with three dry ski slopes: an 85-metre main slope; 45-metre extended nursery slope; and 25-metre nursery slope.
The main slope is open each day for recreational skiing and snowbording sessions. In order to qualify for recreational use of the slope, you must be able to stop, link turns, and use the lift. Beginners will need to book some lessons with the ski school first.
Runcorn Ski Centre offers both group and individual lessons from ages 4 and upwards on the nursery slopes. Lessons last 50-55 minutes. There is a maximum of 10 people per instructor. The snowboard school runs Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons.
Individual snowtube sessions and snowtube parties are also available.
Other Amenities . . . The ski shop stocks a range of ski and snowboarding gear. There’s a free children’s play area the Halton Minature Railway near the slopes.
Swadlincote Ski & Board, Derbyshire
A large leisure facility and dry ski slope providing skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing and snowtubing.
There are two perma-snow ski slopes: a 160-metre main slope and a 60-metre nursery slope, both accessed via button tow lifts.
Everyone over the age of 4 can also enjoy the 500-metre toboggan run and snowtubing (large inflatable rings) which takes place on the main slope at specified times.
Open practice is available every day for experienced skiers and boarders without tuition; sessions last for 1.5 hours. Alternatively, sign up for a private or group lesson available for ages 3 and above.
Other amenities . . . A fully licensed bar and restaurant on site. The centre also offers fully catered children’s parties (4-11 years), weddings, and business events.
The North’s dry ski slopes
Ski Rossendale, Lancashire
Ski Rossendale is the biggest outdoor ski slope in the northwest of England. The centre has three dry ski slopes: the 200-metre dendex main slope is accessed by two draglifts and is complete with a snowflex quarter-pipe; the permanent snowflex fun park; and the gentle nursery slope for lessons only with two rope tows and a travelator lift.
Private and group lessons are offered to suit all abilities, from taster sessions to freestyle training camps. There are also Family Fun Sessions and a Kids’ club.
Freeskiers and snowboarders can practise their skills at the fun park with its selection of rails, boxes, a 13-foot-high quarter-pipe; and a kicker measuring 6.5 feet by 8 feet.
Other amenities . . . The Ski Rossendale Cafe serves a range of food and beverages and the latest ski gear is available on site. The Ski Lodge is used for education, team building, and business events.
Oval Sports Centre, Mersyside
The dry ski slope is located towards the back of the Oval Sports Centre. Ski tuition is available for all ages and levels, from first-timers to seasoned racers. There’s also a ski racing team which all members are welcome to join.
Skiers should arrive at least 15 minutes before lesson time begins to give plenty of time to get equipment and meet the instructor. Remember to wear gloves and long socks.
There is a ski shop on site providing a full range of carver skis and boots.
Other amenities . . . The Oval Sports Centre is a multi-activity sports centre with a swimming pool, fitness suite, football pitches, tennis courses, athletics stadium, badminton, gymnastics, and trampoline.
Silksworth Sports Centre, Tyne and Wear
The sports complex includes a 165-metre main dry ski slope and two nursery slopes. All the slopes are floodlit and served by three tows offering year-round recreational skiing/snowboarding for those who can turn, stop, and use the lifts.
Expert tuition is also available for all ages and abilities, from 4 years for skiing and 7 years for snowboarding. Youngsters can also enjoy the snowtubing.
Other amenities . . . The Silksworth Sports Complex also includes a cafe, picnic area, an athletics track, adventure playground, outdoor skate park, grass football pitches, and a fishing lake.
Kendal Ski Club, Cumbria
The snowflex dry ski slope is 80 metres long and served by two button tows and a rope tow.
As well as two flat skiable areas, the slope also incorporates purpose-built features for freestylers, including a bowl, mini quarter-pipe, main kicker, and a mini kicker.
Recreational skiing is available as well as a range of classes and courses for everyone from beginners to freestylers. There are also eight snowtubes and it’s first come, first served.
The lodge is where you check-in, pay, and collect your equipment.
Other amenities . . . Rental equipment at the lodge, toilet facilities, changing facilities, and a vending machine with hot and cold drinks.
Carlisle Snowsports, Cumbria
The 50-metre dentex main slope, complete with moguls and floodlights, is accessed via a rope tow and is used for lessons and club sessions. There is also a freestyle dry ski slope with a rope tow, two main kickers (three-metre gap) with a perma-snow landing, a wallride with perma-snow landing, a nine-metre rail, hip jump, quarter-pipe, and plenty of mobile boxes.
Adult and children’s lessons are available in groups or private with fully qualified BASI and CASI instructors. Advanced skiers and boarders can sign-up for freestyle tuition and ski racing. Lessons include equipment hire.
Other amenities . . . There is also seating, a changing room, toilet facilities, and a snack bar.
Halifax Ski & Snowboard Centre, West Yorkshire
The leisure complex features an outdoor ski and snowboard centre. There are two dry ski slopes both covered in snowflex: the 140-metre main slope is served by button lifts and the beginners’ slope has a rope tow.
Freeskiers and snowboarders can practise tricks on the big air jumps, quarter-pipe, and fun box. Ski and snowboard lessons are available for all levels in private or groups. A ski taster session starts at £12.50 per adult.
Other amenities . . . The Sportsman’s Inn is a traditional English pub serving food and drinks. A choice of beverages are also served at the Conservatory Bar with an upstairs viewing lounge. Charlie Fastrax is a children’s play area with ball pool, climbing frame, slides, and spooky cave.
Pendle Ski Club, Lancashire
The main dry ski slope stretches 170 metres with a 160-metre gradient and is accessed via a button lift. There’s also a large beginners’ training slope. Skiers can come on as a pay-as-you-go basis or join the club and receive discounted fees.
Pendle Ski Club is suitable for all abilities: Lessons are provided to all levels and instruction and tuition is carried out by qualified Snowsport UK and BASI Instructors. The centre offers intermediate and advanced lessons as well as individual coaching and children’s lessons.
Pendle hosts many national and regional events and is also the venue for the English Schools Races. The clubhouse offers rental equipment, fitting, as well as snacks and confectionery.

Scotland’s dry ski slopes
Glasgow Ski & Board, Scotland
Set in Bellahouston Park, the club has three dry ski slopes: a 100-metre dendex main slope with button tow; a 60-metre dendex slope with rope tow; and a 40-metre nursery slope with a travellator.
A range of private and group lessons are available, led by qualified ski and snowboard instructors, from beginners to racers. Freeride and racing competitions also take place at the centre.
The ski hire shop stocks gear for all sizes and servicing of your own equipment.
Kids can enroll in holiday ski schools and the centre also hosts children’s ski parties. Open snowtubing sessions are another popular choice.

Newmilns Ski Slope, Scotland
Newmilns has a 90-metre-long dry ski slope with powder pac surface. The complex offers skiing and snowboarding sessions for all ages and levels, as well as private lessons and birthday parties.
Youngsters can enjoy sledging on the mini slope.
Other amenities . . . Tubing, mountain boarding and mountain biking. A boarder cross track is available to mountain boarders and there’s a freeride mountain bike track with a range of tabletops and drop-offs.
Bearsden Ski Club, Scotland
The centre has three dendex slopes incorporating a 100-metre main dry ski slope, nursery slope, and a state-of-the-art freeride park, all served by a tow lift.
Bearsden’s slopes are open daily and available to members and non-members alike, as are the lessons. Recreational skiers, snowboarders, and snowbladers must be able to demonstrate a level of competence on the slopes and use the lift.
Its freeride slope hosts a number of well-established events each year. A new rail has been added to the existing kickers and quarter-pipe.
Every level of ski/snowboard instruction is available from beginners to expert level, as well as family lessons. Snowtubing and tobogganing is a popular choice for children’s parties.
The Bearsden Ski Race Club has more than 60 racers aged 7 to 17. Race training is held on Wednesday evenings throughout the year and on Sundays between September and December. Qualified racers with experience up to the National Squad level offer coaching on the mat and on snow – in Scotland and at race camps in the Alps.

Firpark Ski Centre, Scotland
The centre offers a range of snow sports activities throughout the year on its 120-metre dry ski slope. Skiing, snowboarding, and snowblading are offered for all levels of experience. Choose between recreational skiing or expert tuition.
Snowtubing sessions are for up to 15 people at one time, suitable for all age groups. Tubing sessions have to be booked in advance.

Polmonthill Ski Centre, Scotland
The centre has two dendex dry ski slopes: a 100-metre main slope with floodlighting, mist sprinkler, and button tow lift as well as a 15-metre nursery slope for beginners.
Recreational skiers must be able to stop, turn, and use the lift. Qualified instruction is available for all levels.
Snowtubing is also available at quiet times; contact the centre for the latest information.

Midlothian Snow Sports, Scotland
The centre is home to the longest dry ski slope in Europe. There are four slopes, including two main slopes of 450 metres and 320 metres, a 20-metre nursery slope, and a jump slope made of snowflex. Access to the slopes is via a chairlift and two button lifts.
All runs are floodlit for evening skiing and have a misting system to increase speed. Open practice is available to competent skiers. There is also a range of ski lessons, from beginner to advanced, including race training and freestyle. The minimum age for skiing is 6.
Snowtubing (round inflatable rings) are available for kids and particularly popular with birthday parties.

Aberdeen Snowsports, Scotland
The centre has four artificial slopes: the 100-metre snowflex alpine slope with two tow lifts; the dendex slope with two tow lifts; the 35-metre nursery slope with magic carpet lift (travelator); and the tubing slope.

The centre caters to many snowsports, including skiing, snowboading, snowblading, and snowtubing.
Its two ski slopes: a 60-metre main dry ski slope and a nursery slope for beginners. The slopes, accessed via a button tow lift, are complete with a mist lubrication system to enhance speed. Courses and private tuition are available.
Other amenities . . . Three golf courses, a floodlit driving range, and a putting green. The centre also caters to parties for children (aged 5-12).
