Châtel is a traditional alpine resort in Haute-Savoie, close to the Swiss border and part of the wider Portes du Soleil ski area. It combines village charm with serious ski access, making it a strong choice for visitors who want French Alps atmosphere without staying in a purpose-built resort. With skiing from around 1,100 m to 2,200 m, snowmaking support and a North Alps setting, it offers a dependable winter base in the main season. SKI RESORT AREA: Châtel has 186 ha of ski terrain, 98 pistes and 52 lifts. The local ski area covers around 116.5 km of pistes, with approximately 16% beginner, 35% intermediate, 42% advanced and 7% expert terrain. Key sectors include Super-Châtel, Linga, Pré la Joux and Barbossine, giving the resort a useful mix of gentle family skiing and more demanding slopes. Families are well served by ski schools, beginner-friendly areas, shuttle buses and a village layout that feels manageable. More confident skiers can head towards Linga and Pré la Joux for steeper terrain, while tourists who want more than skiing will appreciate the traditional architecture, mountain restaurants and access to the wider Portes du Soleil network.
