Vallter is a curious little spot. It's the most easterly of Pyrenean resorts and glimpses of the Mediterranean can be had from the summit. It's also one of the highest resorts in the range, although only 60 miles from Barcelona. The station's proximity to the ocean can sometimes bring massive snow dumps, resulting in a resort transformed. On the other hand, it's position on the south side of the Pyrenees can mean the traditional precipitation that comes across France simply does not reach Vallter, and the mountain goes dry. However, when there is snow, it's a revelation. It's a quick, toll free drive from Barcelona and with only a little effort you can be skiing off-piste, alone and in bliss. It's also a family friendly spot and the ski instructors seem to be uber-capable. And, the valley itself, running from Llanars to Setcases is among the most bucolic and beautiful alpine areas in Catalonia, free of over-development, rife with horse farms, and quaint town centres. Vallter is continuously overlooked in favor of Masella, to the west, but when there is snow, this mountain is charming and worth checking out.
views, access, friendly
limited vertical, limited expert terrain, lifts
Vallter is fantastic if you are looking for a queue free , relaxing , hassle free skiing experience. We ( 4 blokes - 19 to 47) have visited in the first week of Feb for the last 5 years . After a 2 hour flight to Gerona and just over an hours drive through some truly breathtaking scenery you can be enjoying a cold cervesa in Setcases just after you have dropped off your cases at La farga Hotel ( which is quiet and where the service is superb and the friendliest we have encountered in 5 years - and it`s got table footy !! ). If your looking for titty bars and apres ski Setcases isn`t for you - nothing open after 7pm other than the hotel . Camprodon is a futher 15/20 mins from Vallter and is not exactly buzzin but there are more bars ( Spanish style obviously so smokey and basic ) and restaurants open. Try the pizza place opposite the Hotel Du Camprodon - tell them Ox sent you and you will probably get a discount. Around 50 euro`s for your pass and kit is reasonable Anyway if you choose to give Vallter a try will see you first week in Feb 2011.........Aworrrrrrrrrrrrrrh !
Quiet , reasonable value , no queues
lack of apres ski
Vallter 2000 is a great choice if you want to enjoy a morning or late afternoon swim in the Mediterranean sea and skiing in the daytime – it’s one of those closest ski resorts to the beach there is, especially in Spain. Flying in, Barcelona is 60 miles away to this, the most Easterly resort in Catalonia. Although the terrain is best suited to beginners and intermediates, there are a couple of blacks and a near 2000 foot vertical providing enough entertainment for a few days on the slopes. Uplift is to provided by triple and quad chairlifts. Remember to grab some lunch in the high altitude Les Marmotes restaurant which offers spectacular scenic views.
