Val Malenco is a ski area offering excellent skiing with breathtaking views.
Excellent for beginners and intermediate skiers, it has a couple of black runs for experts as well. The refuges are managed, some excellent, some mediocre.
Good facilities during peak periods, but long queues are needed when returning to Chiesa.
Parking management is acceptable, but during peak periods, the main parking lot in Chiesa fills up quickly, making it uncomfortable (though it's free).
Good daily cost-to-service ratio; ticket management needs to be significantly improved. In 2024, it's unacceptable to have one-hour lines during peak periods for day passes or return cable car tickets for day tourists (what's the point of being able to purchase the Valmalenco Card online and load tickets purchased online if the physical card collection point is the same ticket office?)
There are no automatic ticket machines and only a couple of shops authorized to sell day passes. Ticket management is completely lacking.
Another negative: no shuttle between towns; only the Sondrio/Caspoggio bus, which is the only time you visit the towns. Even here, in 2024, residents (and there are quite a few) will have to leave their cars at home and take the shuttle. Rating: 2
