Mobility in the Pyrenees

The Superbagnères ski resort, nestled above the town of Bagnères-de-Luchon, was once highly popular with holidaymakers.
Why? Because it was the first resort in the Pyrenees to be equipped with a ski lift.
Today, Superbagnères is facing challenges linked to global warming and is seeking to reinvent itself through the renovation of its lift infrastructure.
One of the solutions introduced is the “Crémaillère Express,” a new valley lift that allows visitors to reach the ski area directly from the town without using a car.
According to Baptiste Rabasse, Director of the Haute-Garonne Montagne resort authority, this innovation reduces traffic by 800 cars over the 18 kilometres connecting the town to the resort during the 120 days of operation.

The new cabins are larger, more comfortable and, above all, twice as fast as the previous ones. They are available with a single fare that includes both the lift ride and the ski pass.
Another new feature is the use of an app to purchase this pass, cutting waiting times by a factor of ten.
As a result, 170,000 people used the lift during the winter season, and a further 37,000 during the summer.
The organisation of sporting and social events such as trail runs, mountain bike races and gourmet markets is also helping the resort gain new momentum, while limiting its carbon impact through reduced car use.
One year after the launch of the “Crémaillère Express,” the results are positive: the resort’s finances have stabilised and visitors’ carbon footprint has decreased.
