The resort of Val Cenis in Haute Maurienne has begun an exciting renovation of the ski area.
After careful consideration, the ski lift company has decided to replace an old chairlift on the Roche Blanche sector with a recycled ski lift.
A second-hand lift was purchased from the Savoyard resort of Val Thorens and paired with dismantled pylons from Montgenèvre in the Hautes Alpes. 90% of the parts are “pre-used” but the cable is brand new.
After carrying out the required research, Val Cenis municipality eventually approved the project.
As a result, the project saved 365 tonnes of steel, used only a tenth of the carbon emissions expected for such a scheme, and reduced financial costs by 35%.
The most common reaction from skiers was one of surprise.
POMA’s Fabien FELLI described it as, “a remarkable initiative.” Giving equipment a new lease of life, combined with carefully considered environmental measures, is part of the leading French ropeway transport company’s DNA.
Auvergne Rhône Alpes regional councillor (The Republicans) Émilie BONNIVARD called it “an exemplary project” that allows us to highlight the innovation and technology that supports our region’s ecological transition.
Yves DIMIER, head of the Val Cenis ski lift company, has not ruled out the possibility of repeating such a project in future.
