Not all French people are rude. Some take great pride in delivering exquisite and sophisticated standards of service. Sadly none of them work in Tignes. The abiding feeling is cynicism. It's like, "We don't really want you here, making work for us but give us your money (no, a bit more!) and we'll put up with you." It's hard to find a good restaurant - in 2 weeks last season I found one I'd be happy to go back to and 2 I'd tolerate - but easy find an expensive one: basically they all are! Every place I've been in Italy was more friendly and every place in Austria more fun. And even most of the places I've been in France had a bit more charm and character. Most were more friendly too. What Tignes does have is altitude and a glacier that is still (only just) skiable. This makes it a safer bet for snow at the start and the end of the season. The other really high French resort that serves these needs is Val Thorens and the two places used to be very similar but over the last few years Val Thorens has invested huge amounts in improving its lift system, renovating the town and building some pretty high class accommodation while Tignes has done none of this. The town is scruffy, graffiti covered elevators don't work most of the time and you be lucky to get a smile off a local all week, even when you're giving them your money. Like I said, the way it feels, they're not happy to be taking your cash, they're still just tolerating you.
