Harrachov sits in the western Krkono&scaron;e mountains of the Czech Republic, close to the Polish border, and is one of the country&rsquo;s best-known winter sports towns. In winter, the final approach is through mountain roads, so proper winter equipment is essential.
By rail, Harrachov station is accessible via Tanvald and Kořenov, with regional buses providing additional links from nearby towns. For families carrying ski gear, driving is usually the most convenient option, while train and bus travel can be a cost-effective choice for lighter travellers who do not mind making connections.

Accommodation in Harrachov ranges from hotels and guesthouses to apartments, chalets and self-catering stays, both in the town and close to the ski area. Families often favour apartments with kitchen facilities and easy access to services, couples can look for smaller hotels or wellness-focused stays, and groups have options in larger apartments or mountain-style lodgings. Harrachov is not a fully ski-in/ski-out resort in the Alpine sense, but many places to stay are conveniently positioned for the pistes, restaurants, hire shops and town facilities.

Harrachov&rsquo;s terrain is compact, clear and surprisingly sporty for its size. With 7.9 km of pistes and a 370 m vertical drop, it offers enough variety for a short ski break without feeling complicated.

Advanced skiers should aim for the sportier sections early in the day, when the grooming is at its best. Harrachov has a higher share of challenging terrain than many small Czech ski areas.
The appeal of Harrachov is not scale, but balance. It combines a traditional mountain town, a practical ski area and enough gradient to keep confident skiers interested over a short stay.

Start early if you want Harrachov at its best. The first runs of the morning are usually the smoothest, especially after overnight grooming.
Use the steeper sections before lunchtime. They are most enjoyable when the snow is still firm and the surface has not been heavily skied.
After fresh snow, stick to open and controlled pistes. Harrachov has a proper mountain feel, but the best and safest skiing is on the official ski area terrain.
Families should plan a flexible day rather than a long push from first lift to last. Ski in the morning, pause in town, then decide whether to return for more laps.
For views, aim for clear weather and spend time in the higher parts of the ski area. The Krkono&scaron;e setting is one of Harrachov&rsquo;s strongest assets.
If you are visiting at the weekend, arrive early. The resort is popular, and a calm start makes the whole day easier.
Harrachov works especially well for a two- or three-day trip. It is large enough for variety, but small enough that you can get to know it quickly.
Choose accommodation with easy access to both the ski area and the town centre. It makes evenings, meals and equipment logistics much simpler.
Do not treat Harrachov like an Alpine mega-resort. Its charm is in its traditional feel, practical scale and honest skiing.
For British visitors, Harrachov can be a good-value alternative to the Alps, especially if you are happy with a smaller ski area and a more local mountain-town atmosphere.
