I highly recommend it, but I advise getting to the bottom before or after the others.
A very beautiful area, very pleasant to ride with lots of great off-piste runs. Natural halfpipe with a good level of snow which is excellent.
Arriving at the bottom of the resort via the central piste is utter chaos, and it's even worse when the snow cannons are running.

Ax is a good resort near Toulouse with easy access. Prices are affordable compared to other resorts in the Pyrenees. The ski area is quite good!

Ax-les-Thermes has two major drawbacks: the altitude at the top of the slopes isn't very high (around 2200m), and it's also located rather far south in the Pyrenees, which means it's a "warm climate" resort. It's best to go very early in the season to enjoy reasonably good snow conditions; later on, the snow deteriorates very quickly compared to other resorts that are higher in altitude and deeper in the Pyrenees. And to my regret, nothing more is being done compared to other resorts; I'm not talking about major investments. One thing that costs practically nothing is simply creating separate lift lines for solo skiers or skiers who don't absolutely need to sit with their companions. That would be a differentiating factor (except compared to Granvalira, which already does this and doesn't really need to). Furthermore, the last time I went, the ski lift that goes up above the mountain restaurants closed in the late afternoon, which further congested the two-seater chairlift to get back to the top of the gondola and then back down to the resort. At the end of the day, you're still stuck in that last queue, which could easily be avoided. Here are two inexpensive improvements that would greatly enhance the situation. For me, the two main competitors in the same direction are, firstly, Porte-Puymorens (25 minutes further by car), which offers two advantages over Ax: firstly, you go up to 2500m altitude (no snowplows on the last chairlift section), and secondly, the parking lot is right at the foot of the slopes (in Ax, at the top of the gondola coming from Ax-les-Thermes, you still have a bit of a walk to reach the slopes, not to mention the parking). The second competitor is Grandvalida, (30 minutes further by car), but you gain a lot in skiing time on the slopes (admittedly a little more expensive, but if you look at the ratio on the slopes there is no comparison).
Near Toulouse South East
No access by gondola lift

A family-friendly and very accessible resort in the Ariège region. You can park your car in Ax-les-Thermes and take the cable car up. After skiing, or for those who don't ski, a spa session will be much appreciated. There's something for everyone and all levels. Pure pleasure!

Ax 3 Domaines is a very nice resort, ideal for beginners but also offering some great slopes for more advanced skiers. Beautiful scenery in the mountains and a lovely pine scent throughout the area! You sometimes need to be patient on the slopes as they can get crowded.
A beautiful ski area with stunning views. Skiing among the fir trees. Lovely, wide slopes with an ideal incline for carving turns. Accessible by overnight train from Paris. Excellent grooming. Great snow cover from the snow cannons.
The snow changes quickly and the ski lifts are aging. The slopes are crowded.
