Sauze d'Oulx Reviews

Sauze is a charming town with very good restaurants and good après-ski. It is located in a strategic position that allows for mostly sunny weather. Some lift systems may look slightly old, but they work well and are extensive. Snow is generally good but may not be in the best condition (melted or icy, depending on the weather) below a certain altitude, especially on the last slopes back to the hotel in the afternoon. Although it's mostly for intermediate skiers, my friend learned to ski in Sauze, and he loved it. Overall, a very good location.

For a beginner look elsewhere as there is nothing here without using lifts and then still not good, Sestriere or Sansicaro are much better for beginners. We have been a few times and this was our last, mainly due to the horrendous last run down to the resort, that you don't get anywhere else in the area. Some good skiing higher up, but 3 slow lifts to get there and an even worse link across to sestriere and sansicaro. Not as cheap as it used to be in resort either. 40cl "pints" at 6 euros soon add up. If you're using the public transport option from the airport allow plenty of time. The airport bus in Turin is completely unreliable and the train stopped for over 20 minutes for no apparent reason

A ski resort with great, untapped potential to improve the quality of stays. Perhaps too focused on saving money and the guaranteed income provided by the numerous foreigners who come to ski for weeks. I'll be moving on to other slopes.

• The slopes are beautiful and varied, and it would be really fun if everything were well organized. There are also many bars and restaurants on the slopes.
• In high season (late January - early February) several slopes are closed, there are no connections to return from the slopes to the east of the others and, on February 6th, just after the overnight snowfall, slopes were not groomed.

Came for family XMAS ski week. Resort did not open properly until after XMAS. Told it is saved for when the Italiens start thier holiday after XMAS. Many high runs still closed and not even piste edge poles in place despite plenty of snow. Nothing pisted so very bumpy pists everywhere. Literally one red and one Blue open in Sauze for most of XMAS week. Ski staff did not care. Generally dated lifts and infrastructure and disorganised. Never returning here. Will go back to France where we have skied for 20yrs.

Dangerous runs not groomed huge lump and bumps everywhere many accidents.i will.never ski here again.

Visited New Year 2024 with wife (boarder) and kids (under 10s learning to ski). Only way of getting to ski school mid-mountain was by chair which felt dangerous carrying 2 x boards, skis for kids, boots etc. Only 1 kid per adult allowed which meant we all had to go up together every day - very restrictive. Dismount from lift not all easy with disinterested lift staff not particularly helpful at times. Really needs a gondola. Lifts were all busy at all times in Sauze but better further afield. Unfortunately my wife was restricted to a couple of runs due to 1) very icy conditions (not much snow), 2) poor access between areas for boarders (very narrow icy tracks full of skiers snow-ploughing) and 3) limited lift infrastructure (we were with friends who liked Sansicario but we couldn't get there as only way back to Sauze is a long long button lift - just not acceptable these days). Would not recommend for families and wouldn't recommend for boarders.

Been to sauze a number of times over the last 20 years as I always felt it had a great ski area and apres ski represented value for money and was busy and enjoyable. This week Xmas week 2024) I was bitterly disappointed. The ski area was being actively limited until the weekend when the locals arrived. In addition the cost of a beer in resort had risen to 6/7 euros whilst the volume has shrunk to 400ml ( less than 2/3rd of a actual pin so need to increase the price by 33% so circa £8/9 a pint) whilst still being referred to as a pint or large beer. In one bar I was charged 4 different prices for the same 2 drink round. It appeared prices are made up on the spot. Strangely, a drink on the mountain is less than in the resort. May be the town bars have cottoned on to the fact that once the lifts shut they have a captive audience whilst the bars on the mountain are trying to entice customers to stay longer before heading down. Maybe the higher prices are reflected in the fact tha apres appeared non existent.

Just returned from a Jan 24 ski trip. Had a reasonable week and made the best of it, but only 60% of ski area covered by snow cannon and there seemed a reluctance to use them even in cold temperatures. Piste signage is beyond poor, and no toilet facilities other than in cafes. Vialattea Ski app is useful to a point but information not clear. When additional runs open there is no way of telling which ones. Lift system so so old and lacks the capacity required in some areas. Sauze d’oulx has great potential but feels way behind by other resorts. Investment required. Great value food on the slope side bars and cafes.

Lift system is old and slow, many lfts and piste closed for no reason, several of these opened at weekend only. If you are paying full price for a lift pass then they should open the full area, apparently it's done by the lift operators to save cash. Only 36 out of 54 runs were open in early march. The link to Sestriere is often closed due to winds so you are stuck in a limited area at Suaze, for this reason I will not be returning.
