Stubaier Glacier Overview

Stubaier Gletscher is located in Tyrol, Austria, in the Stubaital valley south-west of Innsbruck. The ski area covers 205 ha, with 66 km of pistes, 23 pistes and 25 lifts. With skiing from 1697 m to 3210 m and around 500 cm of average annual snowfall, it is one of the most snow-reliable choices in the region.

The piste mix is best suited to confident skiers, with around 58 % intermediate pistes, 38 % advanced pistes and 5 % expert pistes. The terrain is wide, open and high-alpine, making it especially good for long turns, carving and glacier skiing rather than sheltered tree-lined runs.

Families are best served around Gamsgarten, where BIG Family Ski-Camp gives children and learners a clear, manageable starting point. Add in modern lift access, Stubai Zoo snowpark and the TOP OF TYROL viewing platform, and Stubaier Gletscher is a strong option for skiers who want reliable snow, big views and a long season.

The most convenient airport is Innsbruck, around 45 minutes by car from Stubaier Gletscher. Munich Airport and Salzburg are also possible, though transfer times are longer. By rail, the usual route is to Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof, then onward by bus through the Stubaital valley towards Neustift im Stubaital and Mutterberg.

By car, access is via Innsbruck and then through the Stubaital to Mutterberg, where the Eisgratbahn and Gamsgartenbahn valley stations provide access to the ski area. Driving is usually easiest for families and groups with equipment, while train plus bus is often the most cost-effective and lower-stress option for travellers staying in Innsbruck, Neustift or nearby valley villages.

The terrain at Stubaier Gletscher is high, open and unmistakably glacial. Skiing runs from 1697 m to 3210 m, with broad pistes, big mountain views and a long season supported by natural snowfall and snowmaking.

The main access lifts are Eisgratbahn and Gamsgartenbahn from Mutterberg. Eisgrat is the best route into the higher ski area, while Gamsgarten is the most practical base for families, lessons and a gentler start.

Beginners and families should focus on Gamsgarten first. BIG Family Ski-Camp gives children and cautious skiers a more manageable environment before progressing onto longer pistes.

Intermediates have the strongest overall choice. The pistes around Eisgrat, Gamsgarten, Daunferner and Eisjoch are well suited to flowing turns, steady progression and full ski days without needing extreme gradients.

Advanced skiers should head higher towards Schaufeljoch and the more exposed glacier sections. The challenge here often comes from altitude, visibility and snow texture as much as pitch, so confident control is important.

Freestyle riders should make time for Stubai Zoo, the official snowpark. Freeriders should use the Powder Department information and the freeride checkpoints at Eisgrat and Gamsgarten, and only enter unsecured terrain with the right equipment, knowledge and conditions.

Start with Eisgratbahn if you want to reach the higher pistes quickly. It is the most efficient way to make the most of the first groomed runs of the morning.

For families, Gamsgarten is the smarter first stop. BIG Family Ski-Camp keeps lessons, easier terrain and child-friendly facilities close together.

Save TOP OF TYROL for a clear day. The viewing platform is one of the best reasons to go high, but it is far more rewarding when visibility is good.

Use the pistes around Eisgrat and Daunferner for long, steady carving. They suit skiers who want rhythm rather than constant stopping and route-finding.

Stubai Zoo is the key stop for freestyle. Even if you are not riding the park, it is worth seeing the level of skiing and snowboarding there.

If fresh snow has fallen, do not guess your way into off-piste terrain. Use the official Powder Department information and the checkpoints at Eisgrat or Gamsgarten before making any freeride decision.

Take lunch slightly early at Eisgrat or Gamsgarten. These are practical mountain hubs, so avoiding the main rush makes the day smoother.

On windy or cloudy days, keep your plan simple. Stubaier Gletscher is open and high, so visibility can change the feel of the pistes quickly.

If you want a lighter family break, build in time for the Snow Mammoth at Gamsgarten when it is available. It is especially useful for children who need a pause from skiing.

End the day with an easier descent plan rather than pushing for one last difficult run. On a glacier, tired legs and changing light can make late-afternoon skiing feel more demanding.
