With skiing reaching up to 3,250 m, it is one of Austria’s most snow-sure choices, particularly for visitors who want reliable high-altitude conditions and a long season.

The ski area covers 619 ha, with 196 km of pistes, 85 pistes and 65 lifts. The terrain mix is broad, with around 12% beginner pistes, 29% intermediate pistes, 52% advanced pistes and 7% expert terrain. Annual snowfall is listed at around 850 cm, and snowmaking supports key areas when needed.

Families benefit from ski schools, easier practice zones, modern lift access and non-ski highlights such as Nature’s Ice Palace on the Hintertux Glacier. Stronger skiers will appreciate the glacier setting, long descents, high-altitude views and the option to combine Hintertux with Finkenberger Almbahnen and Penken during a longer stay.

The most convenient airport is Innsbruck Airport, with Munich Airport and Salzburg Airport also useful for international arrivals. By rail, the usual route is to Jenbach, then the Zillertalbahn to Mayrhofen, followed by bus connections towards Finkenberg, Tux and Hintertux.

By car, access is via the A12 Inntal Autobahn, the Zillertal exit, and then through the valley via Mayrhofen. Train plus bus is usually the best value option, while a car or private transfer is more convenient for families, groups and visitors travelling with ski equipment.

The terrain combines the high-altitude slopes of the Hintertux Glacier with the wider ski areas around Finkenberg, Rastkogel, Eggalm and Penken. In full winter operation, the area offers 196 km of pistes served by 65 lifts.

The Hintertux Glacier is the highest and most snow-sure sector. The Gletscherbus lifts take skiers up to 3,250 m, where wide glacier pistes, open slopes and big alpine views define the experience.

Beginners and families should focus on gentler practice areas and clearer blue pistes. The lift system makes it easy to keep the day manageable, especially when skiing with children.

Intermediate skiers get the most from the longer red pistes across the connected Zillertal 3000 areas. The terrain is varied enough for full ski days without repeating the same slope too often.

Advanced skiers can look for steeper red and black sections, longer descents and the more athletic feel of the glacier. The longest descent reaches up to 12 km, so visibility, weather and energy levels matter when planning the day.

Freestyle is centred on Betterpark Hintertux, the official snowpark on the glacier. Away from the pistes, Nature’s Ice Palace adds a distinctive glacier experience for visitors who want more than skiing alone.

Start early on the Hintertux Glacier, especially on clear days. The upper slopes are at their best in the morning, with firmer snow, cleaner views and less lift traffic.

Take the Gletscherbus lifts right up to the highest sector if conditions are good. The Panorama Terrace at 3,250 m gives one of the strongest viewpoints in the area and makes the glacier setting feel properly special.

Betterpark Hintertux is worth saving for a day when you want a break from classic piste skiing. It is the official freestyle zone on the glacier and suits snowboarders and skiers looking for jumps, jibs and a high-altitude park atmosphere.

Tuxer Fernerhaus is the practical lunch stop in the glacier sector. It sits naturally within the ski day, so it works well when you want a straightforward break without losing too much time.

Choose Wirtshaus am Tuxer Ferner if you want a calmer served meal rather than a quick self-service stop. It suits days when you want to slow the pace and enjoy the mountain setting.

Sommerbergalm is a useful meeting point for mixed-ability groups. It works well for regrouping, adjusting plans and deciding whether to continue higher or keep the afternoon easier.

Add Spannagelhaus and Spannagel Cave if you want a stronger high-alpine experience beyond ordinary piste stops. They give the glacier area more character and are worth planning rather than treating as an afterthought.

Nature’s Ice Palace is best treated as a scheduled activity, not a casual drop-in. Tours usually run hourly from 10:30 to 14:30 and are for visitors aged 6 and over.

Only go beyond marked pistes with a mountain guide, avalanche equipment, experience and safe conditions. Glacier terrain is not the place to improvise for a shortcut or unverified powder.

For a multi-day stay, alternate the glacier with other parts of Ski- & Glacier World Zillertal 3000. Give one day to the Hintertux Glacier, another to Finkenberger Almbahnen or Penken, and use lower, easier-to-read areas when visibility is poor.
