The resort sits at an elevation of 1 587 m at its base, climbing to 2 705 m at the summit, which provides a vertical drop of 1 118 m. Averaging 241 cm of snowfall each winter, the mountain&rsquo;s high altitude and extensive north-facing slopes ensure reliable snow cover well into the season.
Though small compared to neighbouring giants, Champoluc shines for intermediate and advanced skiers, with 71% of its pistes graded red and 7% black. The remaining terrain caters to more cautious skiers, offering gentle slopes that are ideal for building confidence. A single terrain park near the Frachey area provides fun features for freestyle enthusiasts without overwhelming beginners.
Beyond the skiing, Champoluc captures an authentic alpine ambience. A cluster of traditional stone-and-wood chalets forms the heart of the village, where cosy mountain restaurants serve robust local fare. For families, there are dedicated beginner lifts and snow gardens, while apr&egrave;s-ski options include a communal ice rink and laid‑back bars where visitors can swap stories of the day&rsquo;s adventures.

Champoluc is most easily reached via Turin Airport (circa 160 km) or Geneva Airport (circa 200 km), both offering car hire and shuttle services to the resort. For those preferring rail travel, the nearest station is Pont-Saint-Martin, with onward regional bus connections to Ayas and Champoluc. Road access follows the scenic A5 motorway from Turin, branching onto the SS26 and then the valley road through Ayas.
Local shuttle buses run throughout the Ayas valley, linking Champoluc with Frachey and Antagnod. These services coordinate with lift operating hours, making it simple to leave the car parked and hop between slopes. Visitors on a tighter budget will find the combined train‑and‑bus ticket often more cost‑effective than private transfer, especially if booked in advance.

Champoluc offers a selection of mountain hotels, chalets, B&amp;Bs and self‑catering apartments, many within a short stroll of the lifts. Ski‑in/ski‑out properties can be found on the slopes above Frachey, perfect for families keen to maximise time on snow. Beginners will feel at ease on the gentle nursery slopes beside the village, where surface lifts and a dedicated snow garden introduce them to their first turns. These sheltered areas are complemented by magic carpets and a friendly ski school, ensuring that newcomers can build confidence before venturing higher.
Intermediate skiers can explore the network of red runs that link the valleys, such as the long descent from Pian di Verra circling around Punta Vittoria. These pistes are well groomed and reliably snow‑covered thanks to the mountain&rsquo;s orientation, making them a favourite for those seeking scenic, uninterrupted skiing.
Advanced and expert skiers will find their challenge on the black slopes of Col Maurin and the steep, technical pitches off the Bettaforca ridge. The off‑piste options here are also noteworthy: broad bowls and couloirs descend into the hinterland, though these should only be attempted with a guide and proper avalanche equipment.
Champoluc&rsquo;s single small terrain park near the Frachey gondola provides a beginner‑to‑intermediate freestyle area with kickers and rails. For riders craving more, the nearby Alagna sector of Monterosa Ski offers additional parks and freeride zones accessible with the same lift pass.

For the best snow, aim to ski the north‑facing runs first thing in the morning, particularly on St. Jacques, where the steep pitches hold powder longer. Midday sun often softens the lower Frachey slopes, so switch to Crest or St. Jacques to stay on firmer snow.
A lesser‑known delight is the old ice rink behind the parish church, where locals gather for a post‑ski skate. It&rsquo;s free to use and usually deserted until late afternoon, offering a peaceful break from the bustle of the slopes.
Finally, head to Rifugio Arbolle at 2 300 m for an off‑piste lunch overlooking the entire Ayas valley. This rustic hut is reached via a short climb from the Colle Bettaforca lift and serves hearty polenta dishes that replenish energy for an afternoon of carving down the long 4 km run back to the village.
